PREMIERE: David Castellani - Asphyxia [NOETIC008]

Our first premiere of the day comes from LA-based techno producer David Castellani as he returns to his Noetic imprint. We premiere the title track ‘Balloonatic’, a track that is tailored towards the LA warehouse rave scene as Castellani showcases growling trip through metallic grooves and snarling 303 lines.

The LA-based artist David Castellani has been a driving force in the development of his hometown’s techno scene in recent years, pushing the limits of his creativity and ultimately inspiring those around him. A producer and live act running his own imprint Noetic since 2021, he channels a love for modular synthesis into creating his own sequencer module the ‘Precision Disrupter’. Meanwhile, his background in graphic design and passion for rave culture sees him handle the designs for fledgling clothing company After Infinite.

David Castellani features on Noetic for his second EP of the year following his ‘Hyperstop’ EP which featured the legendary Ken Ishii on remix duties. David now looks to craft a new sound using a fresh batch of gear including the Perkons HD-01 by Erica Synths for percussion and the UDO Super 6 for pads, alongside his trusty Roland TB 303, honing in on the warmth of the analog sound.

The title track is a galloping synapse searer, as metallic drum lines and industrial rhythms build energy throughout. Tough drum hits and slinky percussion textures give ‘Balloonatic’ a particularly unique groove, while trusted 303 synths and thunderous sci-fi-inspired sounds make this a dynamic look into the LA-based artist’s studio experiments.

“For this release, I wanted to push the sound into a bigger, more driven space. Most of my music ends to lean into a headier, technical side, and though I wouldn’t call these tracks simple, I approached them with a more direct vibe in mind. David Castellani shares the next chapter in his Noetic label journey, with ‘AntiPull’
It’s been a big summer for modular synth aficionado David Castellani. He debuted at Chicago’s iconic
Arc Festival in his former hometown and suited up alongside Colin Benders and ONYVAA for an
incredible 360-degree experience live performance at Work in LA. Additionally, he also wrapped up
production on his collaborative project ‘Hysteria Dichotic’ with AnnMarie Arcuri that combined techno,
contemporary dance, modular synthesis and film. And on a personal tip, there was his wedding back
in his birthplace of Italy in August.
Now refreshed and regrouped, he’s returned to the studio and found creative flow to craft the
excellent ‘AntiPull’ EP. The title track is rugged machines rhythms from the get-go, before the track
uncoils right down to bare boned bleeps for an off-kilter interlude, prior to the engine starting up again
as the energy resumes. ‘AntiPush’ is equal parts immersive and fleet-footed, as Castellani builds a
rolling industrial groove that soon shifts up the tempos as modulated layers of sound spiral in glorious
formations. A dynamic jam made for peak-time moments.
&quot;My newest release AntiPull consists of two sister cuts originating from the same recording session.
On this record you’ll find heavy use of the Roland TR-909 on drums and the UDO Super-6 alongside
one of my favorites, the Waldorf Iridium, which carries the bulk of the tonal duties. The contrasted
tracks explore both a more linear, big-room vibe and a synth-heavy, funkier, expression of dancefloor
music. I hope ravers alike find these tracks energizing and that they work their way into the hearts of

David Castellani is a techno producer and modular synthesist with a main focus on peak-time, dance floor-driven energy. David’s sound, fueled by an array of analog hardware, showcases the intricate aspects of modern music production, while staying true to the fundamentals that inspire you to let loose on a dark warehouse floor. 

Italian-born Castellani moved to Chicago in his early years and began his musical journey as a percussion player focusing on jazz-fusion. After an extended focus on classical training, David began pursuing electronic music production which led to a catalogue of releases, collaborations, and remixes by respected artists like Superfreq boss, Mr.C.  

Now living in Los Angeles, Castellani launched his new record imprint, Noetic, which cultivates smart and dynamic techno music. With a heavy focus on modular synthesizers and analog hardware, both Castellani and Noetic feature a boundary-pushing feel, filled with hypnotic sound design, explosive lead lines, futuristic sound palettes, and driven rhythms.

Outside of music, you can find David digging into the many facets of design as the co-owner of the art-driven fashion line, After Infinite, as well as, partial founder of the new modular synthesizer company, Anti-Kulture.
