Since the late nineties, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros and his collaborators have been producing what they call "computer music for hooligans", inspired by geometry, metaphysics, noise, cosmology and rave culture. A vortex of generative basslines, air horns and fuzzy arpeggios, their music displays a radical and playful approach to algorithmic composition, with works available on Entr'acte, Mego, Presto!?, Diskono, Scarcelight, fals.ch and their very own ALKU.

Como solemos decir por aquí, es sorprendente la cantidad de sellos, productores y otras células creativas que han proliferado los últimos años en Barcelona, una ciudad que siempre se había caracterizado por tener muchos más clubbers que músicos. Y parece que las chicas del documental BCN ¿sello discográfico? piensan igual. A punto de estrenarse en el festival In-Edit, la película intenta definir si existe un nexo, algún punto en común en todo este maremágnum, a base de declaraciones de los protagonistas, algunos de ellos directamente vinculados al MOOG. Y para celebrarlo, qué mejor que una fiesta en el club con auténticos pesos pesados del presunto Barcelona Sound como Clip!, David M, nuestro Gus Van Sound, y los indomables Evol por partida doble, con uno de sus lives de rave deconstruido y con un DJ set con los BPMs a toda pastilla. Parece que sí que está pasando algo en Barcelona.

Mehmet Aslan - New Africanism

I've begun in earnest to dig through the hours of antique engine recordings I gathered at the Buckley Old Engine Show, looking for dope grooves and killa beats...and, let me tell ya, there are plenty.  With steam engines bringin' the funk to all corners of the early-20th-Century industrialized world, it's no wonder Luigi Russolo was moved to write his manifesto.

This track features raw sounds edited into loops and individual accents.  No time stretching, pitch shifting, reverb or other digital hi-jinks were employed.  The star of the show here is a 1911 Farquhar steam tractor, blowing smoke and sparks 40 feet into the air and tooting its horn to the delight of the assembled crowd.

Not Waving return to Emotional Response with an EP of deep analogue reinterpretations for both the head and feet. Friends and contemporaries offer reworks, including Pye Corner Audio, Tomaga, L/F/D/M and Abul Mogard.

Not Waving aka Alessio Natalizia is back. His Human Capabilities album was one of the highlights of the label in 2014, so it seems only right to get 4 artists to create their own unique versions for this EP.

Starting with Pye Corner Audio, Martin Jenkins solo proto-electronica project has been a growing success since first putting his cult tape recordings to vinyl. A great live performance at Cafe Oto got the label wanting more and the recent split LP release with Not Waving on Ecstatic Recordings made a remix inevitable and he does not disappoint. 7 minutes of brooding, slo-mo dub dance is a perfect opening, haunting and searching in equal measure.

This is followed by the new project from Valentina Magaletti (Shit & Shine) and Tom Relleen (The Oscillation). Tomaga’s recent debut LP Futura Grotesk is a mesh of live experimentation of electronica meets percussive, kosmiche interplay and worth checking. Taking the industrial loops of the original they provide an improvised jam of drums, bass and anything to hand to trip the light fantastic. Perfect.

On the flip, we head for the dark corners of a (techno) basement via L/F/D/M’s remix of Double Blind.  With releases on Optimo Trax and Clan Destine Trax, Richard Smith’s project seemed perfect to take on the industrial dance of the original. Stripping things right back, the core of the track is looped incessantly for maximum intensity before far away melodies bring you back again.

Finally, the EP closes with a wondrous remix from drone specialist Abul Mogard. With his recent Schleißen split series LP on the label, Abul is again at his best, taking the melodic ambience of the original and modulating it in to a brooding and emotional remix that is a perfect marriage of the artists minds.

For Functions Of The Now XVI we tapped up House Of Trax/Trax Couture boss Rushmore, who ably supplied us with a potent mix of percussive heaters. Today sees the release of the latest edition of Trax Couture's World Series: a singular set of inventive rhythm tracks from Malaysian producer Moslem Priest. Rushmore's mix taps into the same energy, with upfront material from the extended World Series family as well as the man himself.

A1 track from the forthcoming 2nd Golden Teacher EP, "Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night" due out late July.

Ultra limited (250 copies) hand made optical illusion "box" sleeve designed and constructed by Golden Teacher. After these are sold out it will be available in a generic Optimo Music sleeve. Due to the costs involved in constructing the sleeves the record will be slightly more expensive than a normal 12" single but will not be sold at some over inflated price. Optimo Music heartily disapproves of labels who add a huge mark up to their releases and profit from the limited availability. While we only have the resources (and time!) to make a limited number of special sleeves we don't think music should be "limited" and we strive to make all our releases available to all who want them, hence the 2nd pressing in generic sleeve.

This EP is fairly out there and features 4 tracks that might best be described as Fourth World freakouts, combining analogue circuitry with psychedelically effected played percussion and chanting. All tracks were recorded live to tape with minimal overdubs and then slightly edited at Glasgow's Green Door studios. Golden Teacher rule. If you get a chance, see them live. Your synapses will thank you.

It was due out in early July but unfortunately the stampers broke at the pressing plant while they were trying to press it so it has been delayed until the end of July. Release date 29/07/2013. Distributed by Kompakt.
