Culling songs from both the Tropical Psychedelics and Cosmic Vibratoins LPs, Emotional Response present an EP of remixes of Secret Circuit’s unique music, featuring versions from an all Los Angeles cast of producers.
 
Collecting Eddie Ruscha’s cassette recordings over two compilation albums has been one of the highlights of the label, so it seemed right to hand over the choice tracks to a set of his contemporaries from the City of Angels.

First up is rising star Suzanne Kraft. The alias of Diego Herrara, very much a young man to watch. With releases for Running Back, Young Adults and Noise In My Head, as well as possibly EP of the year already as Dude Energy, while holding down being a member of The Pharoahs (ESP Institute / Not Not Fun) and not forgetting, one half of Blase with Mr Ruscha himself, he’s a busy man so getting this remix took some effort! However, it was all worth it, as Diego takes the crazy afro-stylings of Afrobotics and pulls it towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. 

Next up is the quirksum individuality of The Samps. The project of one of LAs finest, but hidden musicians, Cole M.G.N. Working with Nite Jewel, Ariel Pink and Puro Instinct is cool enough, but his solo Samps project is another level, with a mind-altering exploration of funk warped electronics. Sure enough then, his take on
Shockers is just that, a mash of beats, bass and sample cut ups. This is psychedelic
dance music for the mind.

Flipping things completely is LA’s Mr Funk himself, Tom Noble. Taking the laid back grooves of Underdogs, Tom does his trademark good time, party vibes with a killer boogie style remix. Letting the groove do the work, keys and a good deal of wiggle just led it all ride home.

Finally then is something Emotional Response is all about, highlighting producers the label is fans of, but letting them explore alternate spheres. While Cameron Stallones’ Sun Araw project has become one of the names in modern psychedelic experimentation, little is known of the alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child. With just one cassette of warped disco edits to his name, here he closes the EP with exactly that, a re edit of cut up irreverence, twisted and looped to distraction - an ethereal experimental and modern musical genius...just like Mr Ruscha.

A lot has changed since we last spoke to Steve Braiden a little more than three years ago. Conversations about the intersections of dubstep and techno are now moot, for one thing. More specifically, Braiden has gone through several iterations in his career, transferring his radio show from Rinse to NTS, and then, following a move to Berlin, taking a break from weekly broadcasts. Furthermore, he's just launched a new record label, Off Out, an output for his own releases as well as those about which he truly feels passionate. Its first release, Braiden's own Apex Of The Sun's Way/Solar Poise, came out last month to some acclaim, and the latter track features prominently in our latest Truancy Volume. We caught up with him during the recent CTM festival to discuss his work rate, the strange experience that is radio DJing and why putting a record out is anything but liberating.

Trust us when we tell you Szikra by Kornél Kovács is an absolute house gem. 

The Stockholm producer released it on Studio Barnhus (the label he runs with Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist) last year and it got a very thorough rinsing on the Mixmag stereo thanks to its lush twinkles and chants of "let's get fucked up". 

With the 'Nincs' EP, he's packing four tracks of similar effect, all smooth house grooves and dazzling rhythms.

After a series of 4 EPs back in 2012, followed by a mix compilation by Delta Funktionen, Inertia-5 introduces Discrete Circuit with a fierce three track EP that follows up previous releases on DVS1’s Mistress Recordings. The German artists Andreas and Szymon have been working together since 2012 and also promote their own Away parties across Europe as well as running a label of the same name.

Following on from excellent remix efforts from Newworldaquarium and Just For One Day, the next single to be plucked from Morphosis' most excellent long player is 'Too Far'. The artist doing the re-working this time is Ostgut Ton and Berghain frontman Marcel Dettmann who here delivers his 'Dettmann Definitions' which will sit on the release alongside the dark-wave original cut from Morphosis himself.

'Definition 1' is a slowed and stripped back bit of deep dark house, whilst 'Definition 2' lets some light in and bounces along a more buoyant groove, with both tracks keeping the spirit of the original alive within thanks to the sparring use of its vocal. Essential stuff...

The surreal location on a medieval tiny village, the rock castle with an incredible view to the valley behind and the sea in front, the wind that was hitting so hard you couldn't even stand properly. And it was the wind that shaped also the playing modus, no way to use turntables, so a bit of home listening cd's mashed with the drum machine and the pedals, I still managed to bring this up. Recording is not really clean, but it gives an idea of what happened on that night. Definitely one to be remembered.

Secret Circuit - aka Los Angeles producer Eddie Ruscha - holds a séance to summon the spirit of the dance floor on Afterlife (BIS005), the lead single from the forthcoming Tactile Galactics album. 

Secret Circuit’s second release for Beats In Space Records following last year’s Nebula Sphynx / Parascopic Rope 12” finds Ruscha working the arpeggiators and low-pass filters to a sequentially slavish but soulful effect, while introducing an entirely human element to the Secret Circuit skill set: vocals. “The voices echo in your soul, you feel them there. But are they really there,” Ruscha incants atop a billow of hazy delay at the top of the track.

The eight-minute ether world trip of the “Afterlife” a-side is backed by a slow churning, core burning remix by the unconventional Ukrainian house producer Vakula. Vakula uses his analog arsenal to push the frays of “Afterlife” into even further corners of the echo chamber, anchored by a backbeat, low-octave organ line that gives the track body with which to move. Ruscha completes the “Afterlife” journey with a procession of hand percussion in dub tradition.

Each 12" from Beats in Space Records features original artwork in considerate and serial form. The fifth 12" features artwork by Robert Beatty, the Lexington, Kentucky artist behind Three Legged Race and some of the most wasted album cover artwork ever. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a removable vinyl BIS logo cling.

Secret Circuit’s Afterlife will be released on January 29th, 2013 on Beats In Space as a limited edition 12” and digitally. Tactile Galactics will be released April 30, 2013. More on that subject soon.
