RAVE SCOUT #082: HANSeL/GReTeL

Gather 'round, children... Hunter Petree and Delilah Friedler, the dynamic duo behind @hanselgretelnyc, bring you a unique blend of storytelling, performance, and dance music in their quarterly sharty (show/party) series. This innovative project reimagines our collective relationship with fairy tales through immersive experiences.

For our mix series, they are debuting a live set for the first time ever. This mix captures the final hour of their enchanting retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" from a woodland gathering in Tennessee. From the very first moments, you'll hear the spirited reactions of the crowd. While we all know Hansel and Gretel found a house in the woods and defeated the witch who lived there, have you ever wondered what that sounded like? How did it feel? And what came next?

HANSeL/GReTeL's performances feature a diverse range of musical styles, including dubby techno, warm breaks, vogue beats, and experimental bass. They have graced the stages of Parkside Lounge, Metropolitan, The Grassy Noll, and the Vale of Cashmere. Their next sharty—an exploration of "Cinderella"—will take place on Friday, September 6, at Rubulad in Brooklyn.

“Hansel and Gretel” and "Cinderella" are more than just fairy tales; they represent manifestations of ancestral lineages affected by cultural and literal famines, and shaped by historical shifts. In 2024, these stories still resonate within us. By coming together on the dancefloor, we confront, question, and ultimately re-write a “happily ever after” that was never truly ours.
