Number seventeen on San Francisco’s Manjumasi showcases the stylings of Italian musician and producer Davide Ferrario. Drawing on a background in both composition and live performance, Davide’s two-track offering is richly musical, showcasing his melodic sensibilities as well as a talent for crafting deep grooves. The lead track “Model” kicks off with a powerful kick and a thick, punctuated bassline. From there the track builds an increasingly complex harmony of layers up into a forceful crescendo of rich, detuned-oscillator synth stabs, with a tone that is both dark but optimistic. The track is well-complemented by “Jewel Ice,” which shows Davide’s softer side in a beautiful sonic tapestry of pretty piano lines, supported throughout by ethereal string pads and sparkling synth details.

First up on remix duties is SF producer and Manjumasi alumnus Bengal, who takes the ingredients of Model and re-works them into a softer, more lush groove. Hypnotic, looping melodic layers carry the groove steadily and gently forwards, with Bengal’s unique and sophisticated percussion style seasoning the mix with artistic detail. Rounding out the package, Toronto DJ/producer and co-founder of No. 19 records turns in a deep, dubby late-night take on Jewel Ice. Stripping the track down to its core elements, Nitin hones in on the seductive piano lines, re-situating them at the very center of a mysterious and haunting afterhours groove.

Our new EP is a mandala of earthy and electric tones blended together with soft, driving drama. Two storytellers join the Souq ranks; Turkish Omerar Nanda and Russian Zuma Dionys complement each other’s worlds with ease, gifting us with an entrancing piece of work where traditional folk sounds are curbed by edgy electric ones. Hebele Hubulu comically refers to the language of those who speak with dogma and pretence, its cascading vocals emulating nonsense words in a jaunty march forward. It is a call to reflect on how you speak to and of the world, a call on not taking yourself so seriously. Berlin Based Zuma Dionys crafts cosmic landscapes in his work, this time serving us the zesty Belantash, rhythmically coiling and clapping, reaching a peak of electronic Oriental groove implosion. This fresh release from Ladino Romance marks the debut EP of Istanbul-based DJ/producer MERIC.
Known for his energetic live sets that fuse house with disco, MERIC’s first official release is a mystical
deep house track that blends a lost Anatolian folk sample with blazing synths and some spoken word
poetry from E. E. Cummings reading “Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town.” The folk sample comes
courtesy of Nezih Ünen and was featured in his brilliant documentary, The Lost Songs of Anatolia.
Remix duties are handled by Berlin-based Coss alongside Turkish producers Anatolian Sessions and
Analog Context.

HEMSHIN, the original mix, kicks things off with a percussion-heavy intro. While the chunky synth
bassline nicely builds things up, Anatolian bagpipes soon take the lead and this is where things start
to get really interesting. At the first drop, the ethnic vocals start working their magic. Atmospheric
synths add further depth to the groove until Cummings’ poetry puts the final touch. Despite being
under 5:00 minutes, it’s mysterious, multi-layered, unpredictable and quite danceable, too.

Anatolian Sessions feels right at home as he adds his signature deep house sound to the original.
With a crisper remix that is right up his alley, Anatolian Sessions doesn’t disappoint. Taking his time
while building things up with a deep bassline and reversing the order of bagpipes and vocals, he lets
it drop around the 04:15 mark before picking it up again.
Analog Context puts a different spin on the original with crossovers to melodic techno. The end
result is a proper banger that still preserves the depth of the original. Strong kicks and dreamy
synths keep things tight on the dance floor while the bagpipes lead us through mysterious
landscapes.

The final touch comes courtesy of Berlin-based Coss, who builds his remix around the Cummings
poem. Pad textures and distorted vocals lay the framework nicely. What really stands out in the Coss
remix is the bold departure from the original in favor of exploring more unchartered waters. The
pads and vocals echo early rave classics, while the groove keeps things trippy. Out from Ladino
Romance, MERIC’s first EP is an invitation to explore lost sonic landscapes, while treading new paths
on the dance floor.

Matibhrama are proud to present their debut EP on BMSS, "Taku Wakan". Inspired by the narratives of Native American tribes, the release takes the listener on an ancestral journey through mystical shamanic rituals. Based on the entrancing evocation of primeval spirits, each of the 3 tracks invites us to delve deep inside our consciousness to discover our totem animals: Aku Wakan (“the sacred”), Maka Mahpee (“between sky and earth”) and Oyate (“tribe”).

The EP has been constructed holistically, with the artwork carefully crafted to reflect the music: the sensitive hand-painted piece by French artist Bellule captures the atmosphere of the EP perfectly with her symbolic representation of a transcended physical world.

Through "Taku Wakan", Matibhrama deliver their trademark fusion of electronic and instrumental music. This unique alliance between psychedelic trance and live tribal music allows us to waver magically between soaring ethnic stratospheres and earth-bound tribal roots. At once moving and grounding, "Taku Wakan" offers the dancefloor a captivating vision of the future of Ethno Trance, propelled by ground-shaking primordial rhythms.
