I composed this Quartet in 1989 for some of my friends. The first movement, Allegro maestoso, is in Sonata form and features a great deal of contrapuntal interplay between the four instruments.

Allegro from Sonata by David Gleba

Here is the first section (out of five), INTROITUS ET KYRIE, of the REQUIEM that I am composing for my brother. It is being "performed" by computer-generated "robots" (unable to sing in Latin), as prepared for me by my friend and pupil, Jackson Macor. It sounds best with headphones.

Requiem: Introitus et Kyrie

Usually the Menuetto is the third movement of a four-movement work of this type, but in this Quartet the Menuetto immediately follows the first movement in order to give greater tonal weight to the beginning of the whole work, acting to counterbalance the massive and complex Finale in D-minor. There is some canonic imitation in the Menuetto, while the Trio section has a light melody, accompanied pizzicati, in maggiore.

The Finale of this Quartet was composed for a "Homage to Mozart" composition contest leading up to the bicentennial commemoration of his birth; for that reason, and in keeping with the guidelines of the competition, I modeled it closely after the Finale to that master's Quartet in G-major, K.387, the first of the six quartets which he dedicated to Haydn. It is in Sonata form, full of highly concentrated counterpoint, complex chromaticism, motivic interplay, et cetera. Following Mozart's example, the exposition features two fugues, separated by a bridge section, which are then combined into a double fugue.

String Quartet in D minor: Finale: Molto allegro

The slow movement of this Quartet is a set of five variations on an original theme in F-major (the third variation is in minore). Each variation features a  different instrument more or less prominently, and has a distinctive rhythmic or motivic style. However, there is still a lot of interplay and sharing of motivic material between the four instruments. After the last variation, the movement ends with a brief Coda.

String Quartet in D minor: Andante grazioso e cantabile

I composed this set of variations on the Dutch Happy Birthday song (Lang zal tie leven in de gloria!), some 30 years ago for the birthday of the Queen of Holland. My friend, Ann Haworth Clemmons is playing the violin part.

Variations for Piano and Violin

I composed this motet some 20 or 25 years ago. The performance is from a concert I conducted in November of 2001, when I was the Music Director at the Anglican Cathedral of the Resurrection in Ansonia, Connecticut.
