Dying City

SCENE 1:  DEVASTATION & DISSOLUTION
Scenario:  Wind-swept village street.  Dark hazy stage, harsh white lighting from above in isolated beams ceiling to floor, otherwise dark.  Strained breathing is heard as the Commoners enter slowly and randomly moving onto the stage dressed in ragged loose-fitting dirty clothing unaware as they brush by one another, limping, falling.  Ca. 1:30, The Red Death, preceded by a red shadow, enters upstage.  He is tall, without a face, and never seeks to be the center of attention.  Slowly weaving through the throng, at the chime, he indicates with gestures to individual commoners.  The commoners show blood oozing through their clothes, bodies, mouths, then sharply convulse and fall, slowly writhing on the ground, very gradually coming to stillness.  Circa 3:00—The Red Death arrests his movement and stands exultant center stage.  As the last few commoners fall and writhe, The Red Death slowly exits.  Only bodies—one or two still slowly writhing—as the music ends—hazy redness.  The striking of the black clock from the Abbey is heard from afar.

No More Secondhand God by R. Buckminster Fuller. 
The following lines begin the book:
Late tonight (April 9, 1940) I am just sitting here for one of the many reasons that people find themselves passionately isolated. (The cause is rarely noble.)
The movements of the piece are conceived as: 1) the Ritual of impotent international deliberations, 2) the Misgivings of the World's population in the face of impending war, and 3) the inevitable March of the military machine.
