The idea is to engage the imagination.  Some art illuminates and energizes, some art tries to sell a point of view, or celebrate an attitude, a genré or stance. Real art simply tells the truth.

I'm always looking for the truth in music.  It took me until the mid-1980s before I was able to master the art of multitrack composition, the kind of total arrangement, composition, lyric writing, performance and production that can only happen when you can spend unlimited time in a recording studio.  By 2001 the tech was available to set up a home recording studio that was competitive with industry standards.  It was at that point that I knew I could do what I'd wanted to do from the beginning; writing and arranging everything by myself, with nobody else around to influence or distort the result.  

I make demos.  In songwriting, demos have been transformed by digital technology into a way of musical production that is more like painting or writing; a private, often solitary activity.  A demo is to studio production as a single live performance is to touring. 

Since 2001 I've completed a fourteen cd, three part music cycle called "Demos of David Larstein."  Part I is called "Past As Prologue," a four cd set of 36 instrumental compositions.  Part II is called "American Demos 1949-1963," and consists of six cds and seventy seven songs.  Part III is called "Edges of the City, 1964-1967" and consists of four cds and forty nine songs.  These albums represent a reclamation of my youth, growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1950s and '60s, and how it corresponded with the pivotal years of the first and second decades of the twenty first century.  All the songs on this site are from one of the albums on the song cycle.
