Anjunabeats are pleased to welcome iconic drum and bass producer Danny Williamson - a.k.a. LTJ Bukem - to the label with a stunning rework of Above & Beyond’s ‘Homecoming’.
 
A pioneer of rave, LTJ Bukem has defined the sound of drum and bass, breaks and jungle for over three decades. One of the first artists to bring drum & bass from the underground to the mainstage, his solo productions such as ’Atlantis (I Need You)’, are staples of UK dance culture.

Today, LTJ Bukem brings all those decades of experience to bear on Above & Beyond’s ‘Homecoming’ from their 2019 instrumental album ‘Flow State’. Written for mindfulness and meditation, it’s become one of Above & Beyond’s most successful releases to date, hitting over 280 million streams worldwide.

“Firstly, it was an absolute pleasure remixing Above and Beyond. The music we both represent draws from such similar influences.
 
‘Homecoming’ gave me a sense of warmth and calmness that I wanted to represent in my remix. I built the remix around the most important elements, the piano chords and melody. I replayed the chords as a starting point and the rest just fell into place. I also love the analog synthesized arpeggios that run quietly through the original, so I resampled a few of them and made them louder in my mix.

Meet JODA: a fresh musical pairing with shared DNA. 

Jono Grant and Darren Tate have history. Both together and apart, they have been there, done that and bought the vintage synth gear to celebrate.

Grant is one-third of Above & Beyond who, over the course of a two-decade career, have established themselves as one of the biggest electronic groups in the world. Eight studio albums (including one as vocal trance group OceanLab and two acoustic reworks), 17 compilation albums, a film score and nearing 100 singles speak to an output as varied as it is prodigious. Their label Anjunabeats is home to a bustling community of artists with over twenty years of catalogue.

As a classically trained musician, songwriter, producer and hitmaker, Tate is an OG Top of the Pops-botherer. In the early Noughties, at the outset of his career, he appeared on the show three times, once with Angelic, his collaboration with Judge Jules and the latter’s wife, performing classic trance banger It’s My Turn, then twice under the name Jurgen Vries. The following years saw more musical adventures, more Top 40 UK hits (12 in total) and more pseudonyms, including the trance-facing DT8 Project.

In 2003, the pair managed to sync their schedules to work on a couple of tracks, 'Let The Light Shine In' and 'Nocturnal Creatures'. Clearly, there was chemistry here. But as the pair’s respective careers subsequently took them off round the world in opposite directions, reconnecting other than fleetingly was never easy.

Then in 2019 Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats for his DT8 Project releases. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary, 'The Last Glaciers'.

“I'm musical, but I've never done a score before, which would be quite an undertaking. And I knew Darren was massively experienced at doing that, and I've always admired what he does in his film work. So my first thought was: why don't we do it with Darren?” 

Jono and Darren got stuck into composing together, and it became a dream project all round ­– not least because it sparked further ideas. So, JODA was born. Working in Tate’s studio in suburban north London, and A&B’s south London HQ, the pair were in a creative bubble during the early days of the pandemic. And the partnership proved fruitful.

It was as if this pair of young-minded veterans were finding themselves all over again. Aptly enough, that fed into 'We Find Ourselves', featuring Grant's own vocals.

“Darren had the idea of using the ARP Odyssey for the bass sound,” explains Grant, “and it sounds very retro. We were listening to stuff like the Drive soundtrack by Kavinsky. So the tempo of the track actually comes from that style of music. We wouldn't have ended up at 110 BPM if it wasn't for listening to that kind of music."

'JODA', their debut album, releases this summer. For now, though, Jono Grant and Darren Tate are simply happy that a project that began almost when neither of them was looking, in the midst of lockdowns, has turned out exactly and as fully as they imagined. Unforced, unhurried, and only done for love: this is a passion project of the best kind.

“It's one of the great things about doing this job: that we get to do this job!” concludes Darren Tate, beaming. “Jono and I love making music, we get on really well together, so we have fun doing it. We naturally have perfectionist instincts, but the vibe is the most important thing. So this is also rough around the edges in all the right ways."

“It absolutely is a passion project,” affirms Jono Grant. “The other thing was, of course, we've done this over the pandemic. So it was cathartic. We were lucky enough to be able to work. And this was therapy of the best kind.”

French house pioneer Fred Falke puts a bright, bass-heavy spin on Mat Zo and OLAN’s 'Colours.'

'Colours' was originally released in September 2020, and featured on Mat's third studio album 'Illusion of Depth'. With over 7m streams, 130k YouTube views, hundreds of national radio play-outs and support from the likes of Jason Ross, Don Diablo and NGHTMRE, it’s fair to say 'Colours' has earned its place as a quintessential addition to the Anjunabeats catalogue. The track also found a home in the soundtrack to the 2021 racing video game Forza Horizon 5.

Two years on, the first 'Colours' remix to arrive on Anjunabeats is from legendary French house producer Fred Falke, as selected by Above & Beyond for their Anjunabeats Volume 16 compilation. Fred Falke is one of the forefathers of the French House movement, emerging alongside Daft Punk, Stardust and Cassius. He’s worked alongside U2, Jamiroquai, Kesha and Selena Gomez and remixed tracks by MSTRKRFT, Justice, Macy Gray and many more.

“I remember when “Colours” came out, it sounded familiar and fresh at the same time,” Falke says. "I wanted to retain that freshness while adding a touch of disco euphoria, 90s nostalgia – and a powerful baseline of course.”

Mat Zo is one of Anjunabeats’ most celebrated artists, with tracks such as “Easy” (with Porter Robinson), “Rebound” (with ARTY), “The Sky” and “Superman” capturing the imagination of the masses. His GRAMMY-nominated debut album, ‘Damage Control’, released in 2013, gave Mat’s avant-garde approach to production its full expression. Featuring break-out hit ‘Easy’, the track took Mat mainstream: a Radio 1 A-List addition, Sirius XM BPM listing, a #1 Billboard Heatseeking record, an Essential Mix of the year nomination and, ultimately, a GRAMMY nod for best dance and electronic recording. 

Mat Zo is a formidable live performer, and will be playing Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Weekender at Dockyards London this weekend, and at Group Therapy 500 in Los Angeles in October alongside Above & Beyond, Andrew Bayer, ALPHA 9, Grum and OLAN.

With this record the title actually says it all; making it was pure fun! Couldn’t be happier to have two-time grammy winner Ann Nesby feature on the vocals. Her voice is so full of energy and strength, and the lyrics are really positive and inspiring. I think the tune overall is a celebration of positivity and love in any form. You can dedicate the lyrics to whomever or whatever gives you joy! In terms of ingredients this track is very rich; from piano, bass, strings, organs, percussion and vocals to the ultimate Bakermat weapon: saxophone! Combined they make for an effective dance floor killer that radiates positivity and simply does what I always try to do with my music: it makes people happy!
