“Contortions” is a dynamic and impassioned song that moves like a sinuous stream between mystique and volatility. The track features undulating dance rhythms, atmospheric pads, morphing leads, a vortex of psychedelic delay trills, and rumbling, driving bass lines. Notably, the focal point of the song is the interplay of vocals by Phill Celeste (Life on Planets) and LA-based vocalist, Hannah Noelle. Noelle’s celestial singing coupled with Celeste’s more rhythmic vocal triplets forms a dialogue between two people who, through journey and discovery, are drawn to one another by an irresistible, cosmic pull. Taken together, the sonic elements converge to render a dynamic story of human attraction, typified by moments of suspense and chaos, as well as resolution, euphoria, and harmony. “Contortions” is the first collaboration of 2020 between David Marston and Life on Planets. The track includes production contributions by the familiar Marston and LOP collaborator, Dan Izco.

“Take Flight”, another collaboration between Life on Planets and David Marston, grapples with the state of politics in the US, as well as in a wider global context. The song commences poetically with the lyrics “Indecision clouding up your vision, Two evils they fight for just one seat, relentless deceit.” Written by Phill Celeste of Life on Planets around the time of the 2016 US election, the song reflects the growing feeling of powerlessness amongst many people in a decidedly broken political system. Celeste experienced a heavy sense of disillusionment in politics and felt an urge to address the question of whether people truly have a say in the political process, or whether they have been fooled by an illusion of Democracy. His lyrics continue, “Today, we might not have a choice, tomorrow we might not have a voice, we can keep up the fight of we can make love all night, let’s take flight”. He expresses a dire need for escape and respite, even if momentary, from a world where money and greed trump humanity, and where propaganda and dishonesty are commonplace.

Kindness of Bearer Recordings is proud to present “Feeling You”, the debut artist album by DJ and Producer, David Marston. The album is comprised of a collection of songs that Marston wrote during a six-month stint in his home country of Jamaica in 2016. Taken together, it is a eclectic body of work that showcases Marston’s versatility and dexterity as a producer and musician. 

The album toggles and drifts between various genres with shifting moods and touches of humour; it is sometimes dark and haunting and at other times sentimental. In large part, the album’s concept was inspired by Marston’s childhood friend, Kristina. Her playful, impassioned, and sometimes poignant voice messages provide a thread that tie the work together. Marston’s conversations with Kristina, however trivial or profound, somehow served as the catalyst to bring this album to life. Kristina also features in the artwork for the album.

Feeling You

After a brief hiatus in 2021, David Marston, Brigitte Zozula, and Dan Izco return to Kindness of Bearer with a fresh single entitled, “Ven Pa’ Qui”, featuring Aquiles Navarro on Trumpet. Marston and Zozula wrote “Ven Pa’ Qui” before embarking on a trip to Panama in 2018. The song features a bouncy house groove with quirky and ethereal instrumentation. Zozula’s vocals are beautiful and arresting, and channel raw emotions of longing, sentimentality and melancholy.

“Summertime” has been covered too many times to count, but in these numerous forms the song has created an indelible musical legacy . Following on the release of their Under the Covers EP, David Marston and Brigitte Zozula decided to create their own version of the jazz classic. In this musical endeavor, they teamed up with trumpeter extraordinaire, Aquiles Navarro, and Jamaican bassist, Frano. Zozula’s sultry, jazz-infused vocals overlay and upbeat and dynamic instrumental brimming with buoyant trumpet riffs, distorted keys and a resonant bass line. The song is dance floor ready and undoubtedly captures the beauty, chaos, and excitement of a New York summer.

The second release on @kindness-of-bearer comes in the form of another twist on David Marston and Brigitte Zozula’s take on the timeless classic “Summertime”. This time around, Marston enlisted MadStarBase (@MadStarBase) to take on remix duties. MadStarBase is a production and DJ crew making waves in India for their eclectic and intrepid sets as well as their formidable productions. After the release of their popular edit of a classic song by Indian disco King, Bappi Lahiri, the crew have struck gold again with their remix of Marston & Zozula’s version of “Summertime”. The remix begins with Brigitte's vocals accompanied by guitar, before plunging into a mixture of latin rhythms, contemplative chords, Navarro’s probing trumpet lines and a deep 808 bass on top of a trap style beat. The ever-evolving track showcases MadStarBase’s varied and all-embracing production style and provides an extremely fresh take on Marston and Zozula’s version of “Summertime”.

The song was written by David Marston and Craig Williamson during a studio session at Marston’s former home in Kingston, Jamaica. It begins with Williamson’s crooning voice scatting and making seemingly indiscernible melodic utterances over a skeletal rhythm. The instrumental soon starts to gain body and muscle, gradually morphing into an hypnotic beat with a swirling arpeggiated synth, punchy bass hits, and stomping drums. Williamson cooly sings about seduction, over-indulgence, and drug consumption during a late night out in the club. 

Notably, Italian DJ and production duo, Lowheads, have crafted a first-rate classic house remix of the song, as well as a dub mix that make up additional tracks on the release. In contrast to the trippy, down-tempo quality of the original, Lowheads’ two renditions give the song an exemplary and buoyant dancoor-floor makeover that are extremely DJ friendly.
