Let’s face it. Promoters want names that bring in people, and most DJs today, of this generation, cut their teeth in a specialty and make sure they know how to make playable music in that area or hire someone to do it for them. Sure the dish of the day is Techno (or whatever the proper name is for what’s being called Tech House and has nothing to do with say, for instance, Wiggle, Eddie Richards, Terry Francis, etc), but throughout the eras of dance music many genres took the spotlight and the cycle will continue. Many up and coming DJs claim some sort of eclecticism on their bios but it seems that it is a necessary gimmick and not exactly something they exercise in the 2h slots (let’s leave that issue for another post/rant…) they get.
But then you get the oddballs. The ones who discovered they enjoyed listening to, and playing, more than a narrow, specific kind of thing. Now hear me out I am NOT HATING on DJs who play a specific thing. You’re a great X-style DJ and really just enjoy play that? Good for you, I wish you rock all the parties you play and make a lot of people happy.
What I am complaining about is that being an oddball kind sometimes suck when you’re not exactly known for… what style you play. Because you kinda play.. what you feel like fits? Because, like me, you’re super mega happy opening up for Jane Fitz (who is in my top 3 DJs btw) and playing trance-is stuff, or super mega happy recording a more mental or ethereal Techno set - which I posted here 2 weeks ago and became my most listened to set, or super mega happy opening for Ms Honey Dijon and playing happy chunky sleazy House Music, or playing in the woods and going psychedelic, or play the bar at @lux and enjoying the challenge of balancing happy vocal tunes with banging’ proper progressive House from somewhere in the 90s. Someone will hear me play one of these scenarios and go, oh yeah Inês plays X. And that’s true I play X, but I also play Y, Z, Q…
So, as an oddball, I just wanted to get this off my chest. It’s just a rant I guess, I stand by my music, I never play a record I don’t like, even if I admit it’s a cheesy “guilty pleasure”, even if it’s not the most obscure digger’s delight, even if it may cause laughter for it’s silliness. From one angle, it is bad to be unable to be pigeonholed. Because you won’t get booked with the help of an ID tag on your forehead. But from another angle, it’s extremely satisfying and freeing, when behind the decks. As some famous “unknown” guys once said, “they will tell you you don’t mix this with that, and you will say watch me”.

Incisive and breathtaking, David Ponziano is a Madrilenian artist, who radiates personality inside and outside the DJ booth. This is precisely his trump card, the one that gives him the winning hand in his moves. He has the club in his veins, many hours of experience behind him, a wide vision and few prejudices. These virtues make it hard to resist his musical assaults and the public in his habitual residences, at parties such as Replay, Reclub or Motel, is well aware of that.
 
His sessions are constructive, formed by musical lines that diversify and combine to build a union of sounds that can range between disco, house, deep, techno or acid, without losing coherence within the musical discourse. He is definitely an old school DJ, one of those who knows what he is doing and enjoys dancing and feeling the beat.
 
The preamble of his relationship with electronic music comes from the mid-90s, when the last gasps of EBM and new wave conquered his heart to the rhythm of sharp bases, aggressive guitars and rough synths. From those days to the present time the paths have been many and diverse, reaching their peak and acquiring sense in the mid-2000s, when he began to release his first music publications under the pseudonym Play The Game. In the meantime, he studies sound engineering and launches his own mixing and mastering studio, Peak Studio. Nowadays and after several and successful adventures as a promoter in other brands like MOTEL, he is running his own club: HALLEY.
 
His career as DJ and producer is acquiring greater dimensions day by day with releases on labels like Alma Soul Music, Lust Recordings, Cuatro Records or Parallel, as well as with remixes for artists like Alexi Delano, Matthias Vogt (Motorcitysoul), Julian Sanza or Boghosian & Torquato and with his active residences in Replay and Reclub. In brief, the last four years have been very intense, enabling him to be positioned as one of the most active and popular artists in Madrid's underground scene.
