Matt’s influences have always been varied, and his music’s rich diversity is in full effect across the LP as he adeptly shifts between tempos and moods, utilising his ear for melody and rhythm to create an absorbing collection of timeless sounds. The ground shaking sub-frequencies central to each track are built to challenge soundsystems and ignite dancefloors, whether it’s on the livewire rhythms of his jungle indebted track ‘Wicked Dub’, the driving sonic force of the drum and bass styled ‘Different Dub’ or the dubbed out, skank-ready movements of tracks like ‘Earthwalker’ and ‘Indra’. As well as the all-powerful bass pressure, Radikal Guru works with a colourful array of instrumentation, and brings in characterful vocalists YT, Danman and Echo Ranks to provide melodic lead and reggae lyricism on ‘Stay Calm’, ‘Know Yourself’ and ‘Warning!’ respectively. The final result is shining example of modern roots/ reggae-centred music in 2013, executed brilliantly and certain to last the test of time. Out November 25th on vinyl, cd and digital download.

Radikal Guru - Different Dub

Charlie P is best known for his reggae and dancehall releases, so this grimey countdown of his rules of the dance comes as a surprise. The vocal is superbly matched with productions that span the worlds of soundsystem including two of the most exciting producers around. Mungo’s Hi Fi start their side with a digital riddim that creeps into more progressive sounds. Kahn’s production is darker with almost eastern atmospherics and is heavyweight as you would imagine.

Save Ferris is a ska-punk band formed in Orange County, California circa 1995. Led by the inimitable front-woman Monique Powell, the band enjoyed mainstream success in the late 1990s with radio hits, constant touring and appearances on a variety of television shows and movies including 10 Things I Hate About You. 

After almost fifteen years, Save Ferris will make their long awaited return to the music scene in 2017.  Following a successful PledgeMusic campaign, the band’s new EP - Checkered Past - will be released on February 10th. The EP, produced by Oingo Boingo bassist John Avila, embraces Monique’s ska and dub roots and also features a guest appearance by Neville Staple of the Specials on the first single “New Sound.”

February 10th also marks the start of the band’s first full tour of the United States. The tour will take the band’s energetic show around the country starting in Santa Barbara and finishing at the new House of Blues in Anaheim, California with support from Vista Kicks on the West Coast and Baby Baby on the East Coast.

Continuing the march to 100 releases, ZamZam 75 comes from one of our favorite contemporary producers, Alex Waitoa, the man known as Akcept.  Hailing from Christchurch New Zealand, steeped in that country’s unique sound system culture, with a rep cemented by a string of deep and dread releases on crucial imprints including Amar, Moonshine, Sentry, Modern Hypnosis, and Artikal, we are very happy to offer the next chapter in his already strong discography.  With roots, UK dub, techno, and dubstep as points of reference, Akcept operates in an open space where creativity and personal exploration are paramount. 

Murderous on dub for some time, “Cambridge Road” (named for Green King Cuts’ HQ where the tune originated) is a weighty, slyly menacing 140 rocker featuring Akcept’s signature syncopated percussion chops & a slithering, minimalist bassline. A disquietingly distorted hook, pitched & chorused vocal snippets and test tones lead the way through a dark dance equal parts eyes down & wariness - danger lurking around every corner.  

“Over & Out” is the secret weapon, a loping, lumbering behemoth of dubwise built for serious Sounds, a stew of filtered hi hat, heaving bass, sampled drum fills, swung shaker, oddly-looped reggae horns, and claustrophobic spaces navigated by cagey reverbs.

Russian-based, minimalistic beat smiths Bop x Subwave join forces with one of the most distinct voices in drum & bass on ‘The Shade’. Degs uses the delicately crafted canvas from Bop x Subwave to convey his eternally important message of continuing to spread love and kindness despite the racial injustices and discrimination he’s faced. A remarkable collaboration with an indispensable meaning.

Makoto and Urbandawn roll back to the 90s with ‘Magic Eyes’ featuring the vocals of MC Conrad, a leading figure within drum & bass and a true pioneer of MC culture. Expect a euphoric hands-in-the-air piano breakdown that sets the tone before Urbandawn’s grizzly bass work drives the track into full-throttle energy mode.

‘Broken Bones (feat. Ruth Royall)’ sees the debut collaboration of Whiney and Mitekiss. They offer their majestic take on drum & bass with spacious synth pads, sublime saxophone riffs and the soulful vocals of Ruth Royall, all meticulously blended together into a solemn liquid roller.
