All we can tell you for sure is that this is not your big brothers dubstep. Yes it's 140 BPM, yes it has a drop or two, but this masterpiece by Mr. Bill and Virtual Riot creates something rare and amazing for the genre. A fork in the road that will inspire what is coming next.

Shave My Head

This is my entry to the Black Mass Whitey Bulgar theme contest. I wanted to write a simple but complex theme that explored Whitey's psyche. I used 5 layers to achieve this:

1) main piano - The main piano melody. I wanted something that was soft, subtle, but also powerful and moving.
2) Piano reverb - The reverb track that sits under the main piano.
3) Piano reverse - This track gives the entire melody a very sparkly feel, and adds to Whitey's personality.
4) Tape flange piano - I recorded the piano track to a 4 track tape recorder, then played it back and put my finger on the tape to slow down the track in specific spots. This created a pitch bend/slowdown effect throughout the track. I wanted this to portray Whitey's subtle insanity.
5)  Piano Distortion - Some low distortion helps to add a bit of grit.

All of these layers support the other, and make up Whitey's Psyche. I imagined him thinking about being perfectly sane, when he himself was the crazy one.
