Méconnue dans le paysage musical du XXème siècle, Amy Beach marque néanmoins l’histoire de la musique américaine par son statut de femme compositeur.
Descendante des premiers colons de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, Amy Cheney, de son nom de jeune fille, étudie dans une école privée de Boston le piano et l’harmonie. Elle fait ses débuts comme pianisteprofessionnelle en 1883 dans un concerto d’Ignaz Moschele. En 1885, à l’âge de dix-huit ans, elle épouse un chirurgien de Boston, le docteur Henry Harris Aubrey Beach, de vingt-cinq ans son aîné. Mettant de côté sa carrière de concertiste, elle se consacre à la composition sous le nom d’Amy Beach. Après des œuvres principalement dédiées au piano, elle se lance bientôt dans un projet ambitieux, une Messe, qui sera créée par la Haendel and Haydn Society of Boston en 1892. Amy Beach sera la première femme compositeur à être jouée par cet organisme. Après la mort de son mari en 1910, elle reprend activement sa carrière de concertiste et effectue une grande tournée en Europe qui s'achèvera en 1914, année où elle regagne les Etats-Unis et s’installe à New York.

Amy Beach a composé pour des genres aussi variés que la musique de chambre, le concerto, la sonate, la symphonie ou encore l’opéra. On lui doit également de nombreuses mélodies pour voix et piano dans le style romantique.

Amy BEACH in her musical context  : Boston in the 1910s

Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) was a virtuoso pianist, and the first female composer in the United States to garner success in her native country and abroad. She began her composition career at the tender age of four, and made her public debut as soloist when she was seven. She was a very prolific composer, producing over 150 works of various genres, including chamber works, concertos, songs, and large-scale orchestral and choral works. She also wrote volumes of music for solo piano, which are still in print today.

Bal Masque (“The Masked Ball”), a charming little work for solo piano which dates from 1894, is emblematic of Beach’s early style. It contains all of the elegance, humor, and good cheer found in much of her music, and this orchestration for wind band by Patrick Burns reflects the colorful spirit of Beach’s original composition.

John Knowles Paine's "Mass in d" is the first great work of music written by an American Composer.  Written during the civil war and performed for the first time just after, it is sometimes called the "Civil War Mass".

It is performed here by the Hudson Chorale under the baton of Michael Conley.  This may have been its tenth complete performance since its publication in 1866 and its second complete recording.
