Inspired by the strange happenings at Knowehead, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim, in 1710-11, that led to the famous Islandmagee Witches' trial. One of the alleged witches was named Margaret Mitchell, who apparently (at her trial) had vowed to turn herself into a hare and escape from the dungeons of Carrick Castle. The last four lines of the poem constitute a rhyme said by young Islandmagee girls on May Day.
