These are 5 miniatures for marimba, percussion and electronics. In it I explored the process of decay, how a very fluorishing sound softly dies out in the course of 5 movements. This piece is one of 6 winner of the ECCO composition competition and was performed by Slagwerk Den Haag on February 2nd 2021

"We tend to be mesmerized by shocking pictures of suffering and destruction, greedily swallowing the biased story that media sells. How is it then possible to stay objective and find out the truth behind the conflict?" This piece was performed in Paris during the manifeste festival, big tanks to Ensemble Intercontemporain members for their wonderful performance.

ABOUT THE PIECE: "What is the difference between plagiarism and quotation? Is it 2 notes, 3 notes? One bar? An atmosphere?

Virtual reality enables information flow in an unexpected way and with tremendous speed, so it is sometimes hard to tell who was the first to launch the idea.

Many creatives break under the tons of information junk which they swallow every day on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks, until they finally even stop pretending to be original, openly admitting they had been "inspired" by somebody else.

In times where we all are forced to cross-branch in order to survive, even your thoughts will be looted if you're not prepared properly. Once you find yourself in this cyber-mash it will be hard to build your own identity based on informational fragments graspable in a few seconds. If you're building upon more complex information, you are automatically demanding attention, concentration, reflection and deeper understanding of the matter. Do we nowadays need this qualities any more? Or is it enough to turn the cylinder and make your own kaleidoscopic plagiarism?"

Description: How often have you been in a malfunctioning relationship? You keep pulling and pushing each on her/his own side, resulting in many fights, argues, compromises and nobody is every entirely happy! Pushmi-Pullyu, an invented two headed animal from Hugh Lofting's book about Dr. Dolittle, is a symbol of 2 entities trapped in the same body, represented by 2 electric guitars in this piece. May this piece push and pull your ear in various directions!

Pushmi - Pullyu

Atargatis is Syrian godess of fertility, often depicted as mermaid, who unintenitionally killed the man she loved. That is why this piece represents a sorrowful inner dialogue to her lost love. Very rich and expressive sonorities have been inspired by whale singing. The piece was premiered by Ensemble Recherche at Inselfestival Homroich 2016 near Cologne (Germany).

Atargatis

Piece for bass flute and electronics which relates it's title to a '90 song by Nirvana "Come as you are". This piece researches the human brain's functions such as remembering, learning, perception, subconsciousness, etc. via several mood miniatures. This piece was commission by Rarescales. In this audio you can listen to parts performed by different flutists (Shao-Wei Chou, Dani Bošnjak and Carla Rees).

This piece is a marimba concerto that talks about deterioration and death. In its multiple instances of perpetual descending lamento, the audience is exposed to a world which is slowly dying, all the while observing its gradual decay.

The word Laibach is an old Germanic name for Ljubljana. It shares its name with the avant-grade Slovenian rock band from the 80', and also contains the name of the late composer J.S. Bach. The band was an inspiration for various foreign material quotation and recontextualization techniques, while Bach's Brandenburg concerto No.6 was the material that was manipulated and repurposed using algorithms. Thus baroque perpetuum mobile gets alienated from its original context and given a new perspective. It becomes an artifact of the times gone by, which we look back upon with a sentiment of nostalgia. 

This piece has been dedicated to my mother (and in a way to my whole family that has Slovenian heritage).

Laibach concerto je djelo koje govori o propadanju i smrti. U višekratnom ponavljanju neprekidno-silazećeg lamenta, publika je suočena sa svijetom koji polako umire i pritom promatra samog sebe kako se raspada.

Laibach je staro germansko imde grada Ljubljane. Svoje ime dijeli s avant-gardnim rock bendom iz 80', te ujedno sadrži ime pokojnog skladatelja J.S. Bacha. Band je bio inspiracija u vidu korištenja raznih tehnika citiranja i rekontekstualiziranja stranog materijala, dok je Bachov Brandenburški koncert bio materijal koji se manipulira putem algoritama. Tako je barokni perpetuum mobile postao otuđen od svog originalnog konteksta i stavljen u novu perspektivu. Time isti postaje artefakt minolog vremena na koji gladamo nazad s nostalgijom.
Ovo djelo je posvećeno mojoj majci (i na neki način cijeloj obitelji koja vuče slovenski korijene).

Blackout

While I briefly lived in Berlin in 2013, I was flabbergasted by Berlin and its techno scene, organized in vast spaces filled with music and streams of people. Thus for me, the opportunity to work on a Berghain inspired project, had an instant allure. The techno of Berghain and my music might seem miles apart, but we share some common fascinations - technology and cultural borrowing.

Microllage – compositional technique I developed – fragments musical pieces into snippets and then reshuffles them to form different kinds of gestures and phrases. By doing so it re-contextualises the music of others, building on commonalities between disparate styles, much like a DJ’s remix of various musical elements during a late night session. 

‘darkroom’ describes a hypothetical musical space - mystical, huge, open and liberating; such that allows your body and soul to roam free. You can’t see, so you have to listen! It might sound scary, but the trick is to let go...

darkroom

'Fanfare' was commissioned by Music Biennale Zagreb in 2019 with theme "City and space" in mind. Six brass players of Ad gloriam ensemble are surrounding the audience, accompanied by 6 loudspeakers. The piece tries to portray time as if it were another spacial dimension, referencing the nostalgia of old chansons about Zagreb, that were used as source material. Hence the opening and closing movements are formally a mirror image of one another. Furthermore, the electronic was composed by reshuffling short sound units from various songs about the city, matching the spoken sound of the text of those same songs. Like collective memory, these sonic fragments become detached from linear timeline and pop-up from different corners of room as if site-specific.

"-People fall in and out of love all the time, don't they? -Every 3 years or so… I just read it in the paper. -I wonder how they manage it? -I know it's true because I see them. But they look so convinced every time. And then suddenly they don't look convinced. But they get convinced all over… I wonder if they're as convinced the 2nd or the 3rd time or the 4th time… -More each time… Most of all the last time. -I suppose so. Most of all the last time…"

Bêtes de Sexe

Davor Vincze is a composer of contemporary music and artistic director of Novalis Festival, whose artistic focus lies on meta-reality and musical narrative that is implicitly stated or explicitly concealed. 
 
Davor Vincze uses the compositional method ‘microllage’, which recycles musical material in a quasi ecological way. With microllage, Vincze is looking for latent acoustic spaces and properties present, but mostly left unexplored in the pieces he is referencing, which often includes self-referentiality. In shivering, hazy textures, Vincze explores the parallax effect, juxtaposing or subtracting multiple perspectives on a limited number of ‘borrowed’ sonic gestures. This enables him to create a meta-reality that contains multiple layers of inexplicit & ambiguous meaning.

After completing his composition studies in Graz and Stuttgart, Vincze specialized in electronic music at the Ircam and finally completed his doctorate at Stanford University in the class of Brian Ferneyhough. His compositions have been performed by renowned international musicians like Ensembles Modern, Recherche, and Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, Talea and Slagwerk den Haag, JACK, Mivos and Del Sol Quartet, Secession and No Borders Orchestra. Slovene and Zagreb Philharmonic etc, at festivals such as Présences, Impuls, MATA, Manifeste, Darmstadt, Zagreb Biennale and others. In 2014, he launched an international contemporary music festival - Novalis. His works are published by Maison ONA.

Vincze won Alvin Lucier Prize, 2nd prize at the Pre-Art Composition competition, Impuls Festival competition, and has been awarded many stipends in support of his studies and creations of new works. In 2020/21, Vincze was the winner of "Boris Papandopulo Prize” for the best Croatian composer of contemporary music, winner of the European Contemporary Composition Orchestra competition, winner of the best audiovisual work at the International Competition Città di Udine (Italy), as well as one of five awardees of 'New Music, New Paths' competition in Hong Kong, and he got selected for the artist residency both at the Institute of Electronic Music in Graz (2021) as well as at SWR Experimentalstudio (2022).
