Världens näst största kontinent, mänsklighetens vagga och snart den viktigaste motorn för hela jordklotets tillväxt. Det finns många sätt och bakomliggande skäl till att prata om det vi ska prata om i årets sommarserie. Det ska handla om Afrika: Kontinenten som bär på en framtid som inte bara är dess egen, utan också hela världens.

Lika sant som det är att hela världen under långa perioder gjort Afrika till det utarmade offer som förvandlat henne till den fattigaste världsdelen, är det också sant att nyckeln till framgång för hela mänskligheten ligger gömd här. Det är en nyckel som vi nämligen måste använda för att låsa upp framtidens ekonomi, som ska möjliggöra fortsatt teknisk landvinning, automatisering och grön energi som kräver resurser som bara finns i tillräcklig omfattning i detta Afrika.

I en flerdelad serie bjuder därför vi, som är programledare Martin Nilsson och utrikesredaktör Joakim Rönning, in er lyssnare till en upptäcksfärd genom denna väldiga, gigantiska kontinent. Det blir en resa som tar sin början i de första människorna, via Nordafrikas urgamla civilisationer och egyptiska faraoner, via den arabiska expansionismen, in i det koloniala mörkret i Kongos djungler och ut igen i frihetskampen, slaget mellan demokratiförkämpar och militärdiktatorer och vidare mot den nutid som snart ska bli till den framtid som bara måste bli Afrikas.

I den sista delen besöker vi den mest tätbefolkade delen av kontinenten - Västafrika. I den stora mångfalden av människor, kulturer och språk som lever här finns ledtrådar till varför Afrika blev förslavat och kuvat. Men hur gick det till, och varifrån kommer den så länge dominerande rasismen som lever kvar än, som sprang ur synen på Afrika och de afrikanska folken som vildar utan rättigheter? 

Afrikas postkoloniala revansch låter vänta på sig, men i modern tid har just Västafrika blivit en plats för verkställandet av den panafrikanism som många tror kommer bereda väg för Afrikas återkomst.
