Where There Is Peace, There Is Beauty

Part of a three-movement suite, War Siren is a sonic representation of human life during the 20th century portraying multiple layers of human experience which are characterized by multiple layers of musical events in this piece. The rhythm of the siren pattern in the flute is written based on all the war dates in the 20th century. The time signature of the siren flute part follows the starting year of all wars during the 20th century i.e. 1912. So the flute part has a constantly changing time signature while playing the tritone interval which is basically the notes in a siren.  The multitude of sonic layers and events presents the very ordinary events in life around the world while violence was happening simultaneously in another part of the world or in the case of world wars one and two. The distorted vocal melody is inspired by the Iranian folk song “Navayi” highlighting a sense of nostalgia and mourning for the loss of love and youth.

One intention with this track was to have something (relatively) upbeat and playful to follow the more emotional previous tracks "Ocean Star" and "Little Blackwater Sound" before diving into the subsequent dark and indulgent tracks.  The upbeat mood winds down and darkens before concluding in a counterpoint sequence (with some hint of the melodic minor) intended to set the mood for the subsequent track.

Let me first stipulate that I am not a minimalist :-) ...but after joining SC I have heard a lot of interesting music tagged as #soundtrack and became inspired to compose some music in cinematic style.  When I think of piano music in movie soundtracks elements of minimalism come to mind, and so that is the direction I decided to go--toward something simple, subdued, and mildly rhythmic--at least initially; I exercised some restraint in this track, but once I got the rhythmic arpeggios the way I liked them, I couldn't resist adding a bit of melody by way of turning it into a piano duet.  Perhaps “minimalist piano duet” is an oxymoron, so in the end I'm not sure if I succeeded in the original endeavor, but I hope some fellow non-minimalists may enjoy this "minimalism with a melody on top".

My latest composition - for a dramatic escape chase scene.

The Escape

Dedicated to acclaimed pianist Lemuel Grave, ‘Waltz Awaiting’ was written as a gesture of thanks for the interest he has shown in my music, and for performing it.

The pianist in this instance is Jeanell Carrigan

Dr Jeanell Carrigan AM is presently an Associate Professor in Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation, the ABC and for regional stations in Australia on many occasions. She holds a Doctor of Creative Arts in the area of Australian post-1970 solo piano repertoire and in May, 2016 released her seventeenth solo compact disc of Australian piano music. She is passionate about promoting Australian Music particularly the piano music of Australian women composers. In a review of the CD A Little Variation, composer Houston Dunleavy said “This recording is one to add to the list of treasures of Australian music that seem to be growing by the year. Surely Jeanell Carrigan belongs in this category as well. Australian music has a great champion in Carrigan’s fine playing and scholarship. She deserves far wide recognition for the quality of her work.” (Music Trust 1/4/15)

Recorded in August/ September 2017 in Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The piano was the Fazioli concert grand tuned and maintained by David Kinney.

Decided to get back to what got me into writing for films in the first place, orchestral adventure scores! 

So in this piece I've try to encapture themes of wonder, danger, action, heroism and beauty.
