David Castellani shares the next chapter in his Noetic label journey, with ‘AntiPull’
It’s been a big summer for modular synth aficionado David Castellani. He debuted at Chicago’s iconic
Arc Festival in his former hometown and suited up alongside Colin Benders and ONYVAA for an
incredible 360-degree experience live performance at Work in LA. Additionally, he also wrapped up
production on his collaborative project ‘Hysteria Dichotic’ with AnnMarie Arcuri that combined techno,
contemporary dance, modular synthesis and film. And on a personal tip, there was his wedding back
in his birthplace of Italy in August.
Now refreshed and regrouped, he’s returned to the studio and found creative flow to craft the
excellent ‘AntiPull’ EP. The title track is rugged machines rhythms from the get-go, before the track
uncoils right down to bare boned bleeps for an off-kilter interlude, prior to the engine starting up again
as the energy resumes. ‘AntiPush’ is equal parts immersive and fleet-footed, as Castellani builds a
rolling industrial groove that soon shifts up the tempos as modulated layers of sound spiral in glorious
formations. A dynamic jam made for peak-time moments.
&quot;My newest release AntiPull consists of two sister cuts originating from the same recording session.
On this record you’ll find heavy use of the Roland TR-909 on drums and the UDO Super-6 alongside
one of my favorites, the Waldorf Iridium, which carries the bulk of the tonal duties. The contrasted
tracks explore both a more linear, big-room vibe and a synth-heavy, funkier, expression of dancefloor
music. I hope ravers alike find these tracks energizing and that they work their way into the hearts of

Italy born producer and modular synthesist David Castellani is an aficionado in all things modular with a focus on driving, contemporary techno. His sound, fuelled by an array of analog hardware, showcases the intricate aspects of modern music production, while staying true to the fundamentals. 

Having formerly cut his teeth in a DJ/Producer duo, David has already built a category of healthy releases, collaborations and remixes, while sharing the decks with industry heavies including Nastia, Mark Broom, Dense & Pika & Vril, to name a few. 

Now based in LA by way of Chicago, Castellani launched his record label Noetic in 2021, cultivating smart & dynamic techno with a focus on synthesizers and analog hardware. The label has curated eleven releases from Castellani so far, featuring remixes from Redshape, Matrixxman, Voiski & Etapp Kyle. 

Castellani’s journey in music has been marked by two guiding principles – passion and learning, including exploration of world cultures. He uses the didgeridoo, part of ancient First Nation Australian culture which he respectfully acknowledges, in his live sets. He was taught drums by respected Afro Cuban percussionist Juma Santos, who featured on the legendary Miles Davis album ‘Bitches Brew’. The experience of working with Santos has stayed with him till this day. 

“It was one of the most vivid memories of my youth. We just spent hours playing drums together and then we’d indulge in some cannabis while Juma would share stories about hanging out with Miles Davis in the 70's. I was about 17 and remember travelling home, thinking how excited I was to start this new journey in music. And most of all, this helped me understand the value of education via a proper teacher within music.” 

Castellani would go on to be an educator himself, thriving as a teacher at Chicago’s respected Columbia College, where he’d teach for almost a decade. His passion for educating is something that stays with him till this day, involved in running modular synth workshops in LA in collaboration with the RE/FORM crew, with whom he holds a residency. He also volunteers with the Jazz Angels, an outreach program that sees him go into schools and help children record and learn about music. 

His passion and curiosity for all things learning, creativity and technological development has seen him create his own sequencer module, the Precision Disrupter. His background in graphic design also sees a collaboration with clothing brand After Infinite, responsible for designing all their rave wear garments. 

A magnetic live performer, recent highlights include a special 360-degree audio-visual performance in LA alongside Colin Benders and ONYVAA; a coveted spot playing Chicago’s Arc Festival and the release of his collaborative project ‘Hysteria Dichotic’ with AnnMarie Arcuri, which combined techno, contemporary dance, modular synthesis and film. 

Castellani wishes to acknowledge that First Nations Australians are the traditional owners of the didgeridoo, a wind instrument he uses in his live sets. He pays his respects to all First Nations people.

The foundations for Clergy were first built in Manchester in the spring of 2015 with the release of Cleric’s ‘Codes Of Chaos’ EP. It marked the dawn of a new day for the UK techno doyen - whose stock as a DJ and producer was already soaring, but whose inimitable prowess for A&R was still yet to be recognised. Ten years, 40 releases and countless performances across the globe later, Cleric’s stock in the industry is now priceless.

Ten VA’s are already in motion, to celebrate the 10 Years Of Clergy this year, and the second instalment titled ‘Beta’ has another 5 original tracks, closing off with a remix from Cleric, for a track from the labels extensive catalogue over the years.

“I like to give unknown artists a chance to rub shoulders with big names on our releases, not pre-judging their music based on the size of their profile. In-demand DJ/producer Yanamaste is a resident at Georgia’s renowned Khidi Club and a key part of Amsterdam’s Vault Sessions crew. His unique sound and fresh creative approach result in raw and visceral techno, reflecting his passion for pushing boundaries and showcased perfectly via his ‘Dance’ EP on Vault last year. Now, he returns with an EP born out of the creative process behind his live set with a debut appearance on SHDW’s Mutual Rytm, ‘Evil’ - a collection of heavily-requested tracks that have already made an impact after featuring in his Boiler Room and Stone Techno Festival livestream.

‘Evil’ kicks things off with perfectly rubbery, funky drum patterns and an urgent sense of movement that sweeps you off your feet. ‘Lahante’ is more percussive, with busy snares riding the rolling, forceful drums and stark synths arresting your attention. ‘Dragonfly’ is perfectly reduced via minimal drums intertwined with thunderous effects and ghoulish energy, while ‘Modulation Detected’ has a more cosmic feel as it journeys into the future with whispered spoken words and synths searching across the face of the groove. Last but not least is the irresistible broken beat goodness of ‘Walking On Mars’, with its swinging kicks and vast bassline spraying about the mix beneath hypnotic melodic patterns.

There are few artists carving out a legacy for themselves like Dax J is right now. The British DJ and producer from London has gone from pirate radio to magazine covers; from the backroom parties to headlining raves at every major techno institution the world over, all whilst staying true to the underground with an individual style all of his own. His technical skill, pure selection as a DJ and attention to high-end sound production has placed him at the forefront of a global scene, and established him as a singular presence within modern dance music.
 
Recent accolades for his unswerving devotion to his sound have included places in the top 100 DJs polls published by Resident Advisor, DJ Mag and Groove Magazine. Over the years, he’s also received nominations as Best Techno DJ, Best Breakthrough DJ and Best British DJ from Mixmag, DJ Mag and the DJ Awards. He's renowned for playing mammoth closing sets at monumental parties including 10-hour marathons in the world’s most notorious techno clubs, Berghain and Bassiani.

Also known as a prolific producer and successful record label boss, his trademark sound remains in constant rotation among the most respected DJs in dance music. It’s a style that has evolved over many years, but which was first fully recognised on his highly acclaimed 2015 album, "Shades of Black". Upon its initial release on his own Monnom Black label, Mixmag named it "Album of the Month", Hardwax described it as “brilliantly banging” and it also took the coveted No.1 spot on Juno Records. 2018 saw Dax release his multi-faceted second solo album “Offending Public Morality”. The record won support across the board, including that of BBC Radio 1 who picked it as their “Biggest Record of the Week”. By the end of 2018, “Offending Public Morality” also featured in the “Top 50 Albums of the Year” lists for DJ Mag, Tsugi and Apocalypse Mag. Two more events that crowned a year of great success were his enrolment into the BBC hall of fame with the release of his debut Radio 1 Essential Mix, and Be.At.TV’s choice of his 4-hour closing set at NeoPop Festival for their “Best DJ set of the year”.
