The SAF Dream is a cadence song written as a tribute to the Singapore Armed Forces, as part of the SAF50 celebrations in commemoration of 50 years of national defence. In military tradition, songs sung during training have always played a crucial role in boosting the morale and camaraderie of soldiers. From past to present, the songs of choice by our soldiers were army tunes from around the world, dating back to a long tradition. Local adaptations and tunes were improvised and eventually identified stronger amongst servicemen. The SAF Band, as musical ambassadors of the SAF, envisioned presenting an original song to boost a greater sense of identity, belonging, and esprit de corps within the organization. The SAF Dream embodies the values, vision and mission of the SAF and MINDEF.

Valensole is a small town located in the Alpes de Haute Provence in France. Surrounding the charming villages on the plateau lined with medieval stone and pastel painted houses are thousands of hectares of fields, devoted to the cultivation of wheat and lavender, with a backdrop of the snowy peaks of the Alps. Plateau de Valensole: Landscape of Dreams is a neoclassical tone poem composed to portray the scenic impressions of the iconic landscape.

小幸運 A Little Happiness (MIDI Demo)

Good Morning, Sir! (早安老师) is the theme song of an SBC (Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, now known as MediaCorp TV) drama series of the same name aired in 1989. Set in the post-war period in the 1950s, the plot revolves around the rise of the public importance of school education. The series stars veteran actress Chen Liping and actor Li Nanxing, and has since became a household name accompanying the growth of many Singaporeans at the turn of the millennium. Today, the song is still commonly sung and broadcasted during Teachers’ Day celebrations as an appreciation to the educators.

Commissioned by the Lion City Brass Band under its music director, ME4 Ignatius Wang, Of Orchids and Crimson Sunbirds: Sights of the Lion City-State is a musical piece composed to portray the scenic impressions of the imagery of the Republic of Singapore. The title is metaphorical – Orchids being the national flower since 1981, while the Crimson Sunbird has been nominated as the unofficial national bird of Singapore.

The work illustrates and centralises around three imagery titled within the music as such: Singapore Skyline, City In A Garden and Cultural Diversity. Each short movement presents the musical interpretation of the composer’s impression on the iconic sights of the nation. Intermittently juxtaposed with familiar local tunes, the piece culminates in a recapitulation of the central motifs of the work.

Piece opens in Bb major. First subject at bar 3. Extension of first subject (i.e. new idea) at fig. D, towards the end juxtaposed with the opening verse from We Are Singapore. At fig. E, bass line closes the section with an augmented motif of the first subject, and ends the phrase with the closing of the verse from Munnaeru Vaalibaa.

City In a Garden (1' 50")
In the dominant key of F major. Second subject presented in the solo Euphonium. At fig. G, the same material becomes the secondary voice while a harmonic variant takes over as the melody. The section builds to its harmonic climax as it modulates into the next section by bridging the Neapolitan 6th of the old key (i.e. F major) to the German 6th of the new key (i.e. Db major).

Cultural Diversity (2' 59")
Fugal passage builds in perfect 5ths from the motif from the first subject, to a variant on the opening of the second subject and lastly to the melody from the chorus of Di Tanjong Katong. The contrapuntal interplay signifies the combination of cultural identities that defines the nation. The passage ends in a final modulation back to the tonic key (i.e. Bb major).

Sights of the Lion City-State (3' 45")
The final section is not an image-impression by itself but a recapitulation of the first subject. Instead of moving into its extended phrase, the passage moves into the finale using the second subject.

Of Orchids and Crimson Sunbirds: Sights of the Lion City-State

Dax Wilson Liang (b. 1989) is a Singaporean composer who is currently serving as Chief Composer/Arranger of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Band, heading the Music Composition & Arrangement Office (MCAO).

Dax began formal studies in horn performance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) under the tutelage of SSO Associate Principal Horn, Jamie Hersch. As an ensemble musician, he has worked with several local orchestras such as the Singapore Lyric Opera, The Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Music Makers and the Windstars Ensemble. In 2013, he was awarded a Licentiate Diploma in Horn Performance with a Distinction from the Trinity College of London. 

Joining the SAF Central Band in 2012, Dax first served as an Instructor with responsibilities for organising training courses for military musicians and brought transformation to the musical academic curriculum. After several years of instructional experience in the subjects of music theory, aural perception, ensemble musicianship and music appreciation, he was appointed Senior Instructor and subsequently Head Training Development, tasked with the staff development of training plans and policies for the capability development of military musicians. Formerly a Group Leader in Human Resource Management, Dax now hold concurrent appointments as the Deputy Finance Officer and the Assistant Unit Corporate IT Officer.

As a composer, Dax’s compositions and arrangements has received acclaimed performances in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and Asia. His arrangements of national songs, local folk tunes and original works, The Lion City series, has reached an international audience in countries including Scotland, Switzerland, Russia, China, Germany and the United States of America, programmed in various prestigious military tattoos and festivals around the world such as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Virginia International Tattoo and the Musikfest der Bundeswehr.

Locally, Dax has received commissions from prominent organisations including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Lion City Brass Band, the Orchestra Collective and the Singapore Wind Symphony. As Chief Composer/Arranger of the SAF Band, he has written music for major state events such as the National Day Parade since 2015, and has inaugurated works into the official SAF Ceremonial Music repertoire including the Digital and Intelligence Service March, The SAF Dream and has led the orchestration revision project for the 2022 Wind Band Edition of Majulah Singapura- National Anthem of the Republic of Singapore.

Dax is currently pursuing his Master of Music Leadership (MMusL) graduate studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. As part of the music leaders community, Dax is a strong advocate for lifelong learning, arts administration leadership and the increasing of academia representation in the wind band community. Artistically, he is a proponent of music theory literacy, aural proficiency and awareness and championing musical writing as an inseparable aspect of artistic expression: the idea that all musicians are inherently creators - be it through musically expressing existing scored works or the actualisation of original musical intent, values and ideas.
