The second entry in a three-part series of music based around his studio, Ian Pooley’s ‘Studio A Pt. 2’ for Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint sees the bonafide house legend deliver another choice selection of grooving hardware productions.

Leading the A-side is the fluttering synths and warped vocal samples of ‘JV Organ & Matrix’, which twists and turns through delightful FX and rumbling bass. ‘Version 2’ of the track follows, contorting elements of the original into a heads-down groover, with washed-out processing and stereo wizardry meeting classic dub techniques.

On the flip, ‘Back Up’ keeps it live and direct with hard-hitting, chunky drums and menacing acid lines, with an additional stripped back digital ‘Beats Bass’ version included. Rounding out the 12” is 101202, a dreamy slice of razor-sharp house, with gorgeous filtered pads drifting in tandem with strung out low end and skippy percussion.

Active since the early 90s, the German DJ/producer has released on the likes of Force Inc, V2 Records, and his own Pooledmusic, remixing for the likes of Deee-Lite, Carl Cox and many more, as well as being one of the few to be remixed by Daft Punk.

Forged in the vibrant scene of Zurich, Denis Skok, an artist deeply infatuated with rhythm, encapsulates his diverse influences into this release. From the very outset of the first track “Delight In” we are plunged headfirst into the unyielding drum patterns wrapped in a deep, engulfing bassline. Synth arrangements drenched in funk bring out the integration of the French House scene. Instead of dominating the soundscape of the song, the vocals perch subtly in the backdrop behaving as distant echoes and providing a layer of nuanced depth, harmonizing perfectly with the soulful chord progression. 

Continuing with this balance in composition and game of contrasts, Skok’s “How To Feel Good” takes that to a whole other level by allowing the heavy drums to maintain a simple uncluttered rhythm that complements the robust bass, giving the track a dark rhythmic texture. Skok then infuses in synth pads that lighten up beat with a more soulful vibrancy. 

“Thought Love” the final track encapsulates Skok’s unique perspective and approach to music alongside his ability to create an immersive, genre-blending experience. Drums pulsating interplay with heavy basslines, crafting a sound that is both intense and precise. Amidst the energetic beat, Skok weaves in Funk-inspired guitar licks and expansive airy synth pads.
