Tom Frankel and Dayne Harper, founders of the record label Council Work and purveyors of British underground dance sounds, make their debut as duo Frankel & Harper on Time Is Now’s white label series. They serve up five killer cuts of explorative bass-driven production.

The EP opens with ‘Track & Trace’, a smooth but high intensity roller that never gives you a breather from the heavy sub bass. The breaks that hit after the drop push the momentum for the rest of the record. ‘Ultraheat’ features clever chopped up vocals and bubbling effects that create a skippy, upbeat shine to a forward beat that would be at home in the dark of the club. More clubwise production on ‘Every Grain of Sand’, where echoed samples give a cavernous space to the track which is filled by shimmering arps and the low-end rumble of bass, real late night business that rolls into ‘Heinous Fly Trap’s classic heads-down garage sound. Shuffling house energy meets two-step on ‘Magnolia’, bringing the party energy for the record closer.

After getting a new mixer and my technics upgraded and serviced, it would be rude not to continue the 100% WAX mix series! So here is the first instalment of 2022. Starting the year with just over an hour of some of my favourite UKG records, dug out some serious gems for this one, and managed to find a few saucy blends with some percies. Mostly slabs from that golden era from around 97-99, couple slightly older and some newer bits. Representing Jersey next up on our Time Is Now white label series is one of UKG’s most exciting up-and-comers who brings some serious ruffage whilst paying tribute to his Turkish heritage through melody and instrumentation.

Having recently collaborated on a weighty dubstep number with Riko Dan and TIN family members, Daffy & Soul Mass Transit System, Dominus has already established his place amongst some of the scene’s most widely-recognised names. It’s clear to see why. In The Shadows EP brings to the table five full-bodied UKG bangers, one with a unique twist which in particular sets his production style apart and pays testament to his experimental prowess. 

‘Sultan’ takes its stylistic inspiration from traditional Turkish worship song, translating in Arabic-inflected vocal wails and instrumental percussion, and giving an exciting taste of what’s to come in his forthcoming material. With a warped bassline and wub galore, ‘On Fire’ is sure to be heard in DJ sets across the country, whilst ‘Sweet Enough’ sees Dominus team up with close compadre and Aussie stalwart, DJ Sunroof, on a similarly naughty number. Finally, antagonistic vocal chops prewarn of ‘Psycho Blud’’s fierce tone, later remixed by one half of illustrious duo Frankel and Harper who injects an infectious 4x4 rhythm and brings the EP to a rapturous close.
