Europe is sinking into populism. The void left by politicians is slowly being filled by petty discourses promoting hatred and mistrust, encouragin people to turn upon themselves unable to find adequate responses in a globalised world.
Europe seem stuck in quicksand and every week, new statements and events drag it slowly downwards.
Dance music itself can often seem like a reflection of this rampant populism, only offering, cheap and easy throw away sensations and consumerism, recalling the « bread and games » from ancient Rome.
Personalizing this political decay within the club world, « The Populists » thrive to give clubbers back what they deserve - a place for open minded people - by bringing meaning to a music that is often devoid of it.
The club has always been a place for freedom and emancipation, for social and sensorial experimentation, and unfortunately today, it’s often a space of consumption with its formatted shapes, infinite tunnel of build-ups, drops, breakdowns and clinical productions.
￼￼Behind every « The Populists » tracks is an aspect conquering and destructive populsm. Behind each of their performance, a way to resist it.

Last week brought the welcome news Detlef Weinrich had opened up his archive of unreleased Tolouse Low Trax material spanning the past 10 years to Paris label Antinote for a trilogy of records. We noted this was coming at a time the former Kriedler band member was starting to get wider exposure for his own distinct brand of idiosyncratic dancefloor material; his Rushing Into Water 12" for local Düsseldorf label being among this year's best releases. A commission to remix Sano for the Colombian's incoming return to Cómeme is further evidence of this belated and well deserved rise for Tolouse Low Trax. There is of course a shared love of electronic music production at its most basic that ensures a Tolouse Low Trax appearance on Cómeme makes perfect sense, and you could argue that much of Weinrich's work sounds like a track from Matias Aguayo's label played at the wrong speed.

However, Weinrich's source material for his self-styled Tolouse Low Trax Interview Remix, Sano's "La Grúa" is much closer to the tempo he operates at. The first tangible material since his self-titled Sano LP some three years ago, Sebastian Hoyos toys around with a famous break on "La Grúa" at a pace that would perk the ears of Andrew Weatherall. On the Tolouse Low Trax remix, the sense of space is all the more apparent and finely complemented by some creeping vocal samples - stream it in full below.

Well we are back from our summer holidays with a new PREMIERE FROM PARDON MOI!!!! Its part of an EP which is set to be released this weekend in preparation for the Andrew Weatherall Convenanza Festival!!! 

A little bit of text about it:

Berlin based Pardon Moi, consisting of James Brook and Thomas Freudenthal, makes music that would fit perfect as a soundtrack for a ride in a Ferrari GTO convertible, or on a transatlantic flight on a Concorde. Unfortunately, vintage Ferraris are ridiculously expensive and Concords are taken out of flight but still, the music creates an air of luxury and decadence for you to fill your lungs and air with.,,Swiftly bursting into the electronic scene in 2016, the duo managed to release a couple of EPs and singles on Nein Records and Emerald & Doreen Recordings and then drew the attention of one of the most interesting and diverse European labels - Gothenburg based Höga Nord Records.,,Pardon Moi’s sound is warm, creative, uplifting and retro thanks to the use of analogue synthesisers. The musical direction is toward the future. A utopia built in a world where the 90s never happened. This is retro futuristic dance music, but the music doesn't stop with being only nostalgic but holds qualities that would make any actor within any scene of modern electronic dance music envy.'

Fontän have had the honour to be remixed by some of the most interesting names in electronic music: Red Axes, Timothy J. Fairplay, Khidja, Mythologen and Pardon Moi give their take on tracks from the duo’s latest release Fontän (Höga Nord Rekords, 2017). The music moves in the landscapes of Leftfield, Techno, House and New Wave.
The evolution of Fontän continues from the cold and barren landscapes of the Swedish west coast, through some of the deepest cave like studios in Europe, out on to the continental club scene.

Hard Work is the first release on Industria, Robi Insinna’s brand new project label.

Back in 2001 Robi Insinna founded the seminal Relish label in direct response to a thendominant sound in club music. Its catalogue is as vast as it is varied and foreshadowing the music he'd go on to make himself under Headman/Manhead. Fast forward to 2018 and after more than a decade he's on the move again launching new Project label, Industria with 'not quite an album, not quite an EP, Hard Work. Robi felt there was no reason to split projects the way he did with his aliases and as such the debut will be released under Robi's own name.

Industria will be focused more on vinyl releases, but not solely vinyl. The project will encompass all area's of Robi's work and ties together elements of his art and visual design projects. This release is limited to 200 copies, 50 of them will feature a special Artwork, that will be sold in
selected places.

Merging Robi's disco leanings with an opiate smooth, stoned groove the title track Hard Work opens proceedings and heads immediately for the dancefloor dragging its hushed vocals and skewed guitar line kicking and screaming with it. The dub rolls in next further stretching and twisting the guitar and giving the rhythm more space to swing. It most of all draws from the sense of outsider-disco fun, with the sound of stuttering percussion, a wry smile, and a knowing wink running throughout. Düsseldorf Krautrockers Die Wilde Jagd take over remix duties on the third track of the A side and cast Hard Work off into unfamiliar and experimental territory, using bright synth splashes,
squashed vocal samples and a pulsing rhythm to wrestle the groove and growling sense of menace out of the track.
Side 2 kicks things off with Some Believe coming to life with arpeggio'd synth shapes and brutish drums. The overall feel, however, suggests considerable care and attention has been paid to make it sound this way. There's clearly an uncommon musicality at play here to make something this complex feel so simple. The BPM drops next on The Kiss but from the offset, there's enough funk and thrust in the
motorised synth line to get bodies gently grooving without the beauty getting lost in the slower
loop. A dramatic bass leads and a xylophone playing a nervous but euphoric melody follows. It's glassy mallets pinging atop the warm electronics creating a fresh groove. Closing track Oct17 rounds off the record and puts an ever more personal spin on retro analogue
sounds with synths and drummachines . A razor-sharp snare fires against the bassline and what sounds like a sliced vocal loop before these elements settle into a more measured thrust with the
undulating synth tones offset by funkier ingredients. This is a record that doesn't have its eyes fixed on past glories but references all the element that made Robi's previous work so special. Hard Work sounds like it's here to freshen up 2018. It's music that leaves scorch marks and smoulders. It is the sound of our very own, very recent times.

Originally written and produced as the centrepiece to his 2014 FabricLive compilation, Erol Alkan’s ‘Sub Conscious' arrives on 12” vinyl and to streaming platforms for the first time, accompanied by two charismatic remixes from Manfredas.

Shimmering and undulating, the original cut of ‘Sub Conscious’ was designed with Fabric’s cavernous main room in mind, taking full advantage of any finely-tuned soundsystem with a patient, rhythmic trip. Remastered here, the track evolves out of hazy darkness towards halcyon euphoria in a uniquely Alkan style.

Resident at Opium Club in Vilnius, cult DJ and producer Manfredas provides two hugely creative and alternative takes on ‘Sub Conscious’. The first works hallucinatory magic with a supple bassline and much of Alkan’s original stretched and repurposed around vampish oscillations and a westward vocal sample.

On the contrary, the ‘Stream Of Consciousness' mix sees Manfredas pitch down and strum the bones of ‘Sub Conscious’, unexpectedly delivering a lovingly lethargic, bottom-heavy jam that’s pure dubside pleasure.
