In this episode, we welcome @djritu & @nabihahiqbal - two figureheads of the Asian Underground movements of the past and present. In chatting to Ritu Ji we delve into the history of the movement, its origins, and the realities for marginalised groups in the scene. As well as chatting about Ritu’s long and incredible career in the music industry as a DJ, bandleader, founder of Outcaste Records in 1994 and running two of the oldest South Asian club nights: Club Kali & Kuch Kuch. Our brilliant conversation with Nabihah explores the realities of being a South Asian in the music industry today, as well as drawing parallels between the original movement and the ‘resurgence’ we’re currently living through. Nabihah challenges the idea of the Asian Underground term and speaks honestly about the realities as a South Asian in alternative music.

Next up in our LGBTQIA+ History Month series is @hasznat who brings us a hi-speed, glitchcore, techno/dembow mash up like no other.

HASZNAT is Bengali, Audio-Visual Punk Artist, based in London, with an eye for all things avant garde and against the binary. Their unique mash ups of sounds and genres is creating a new generation of punk that is here to “provoke minds and invoke emotions”.

@zarina0 (Sarah Zarina Hakani), a Shi'a Muslim multidisciplinary artist from Atlanta, GA and is based in Brooklyn, NY. From MoMA PS1 to her friends' living rooms, Zarina keeps things warm and playful through her hometown selections, blissed-out vocals, and genre-bendy dancefloor explosions.

She volunteers with @8ballcommunity, is the artist-in-residence at @risolab, and co-founded @reconstructedmag, a creative magazine centering queer, Black, and Shi'a Muslims.

In this mix, Zarina guides listeners through a steep trek and gives us the tools to traverse with gentleness when warranted and raw energy when demanded. It's cautious, but it's a celebration. <3

Our final mix comes from Canadian Producer, Remixer, DJ - Lady Pista @ladypista, best known as a pioneer of multi-genre remixing of South Asian beats x Western music. Lady Pista built herself a standout reputation as the first groundbreaking - woman Tamil DJ in the world! She began her career creating Tamil remixes in the early 2000s, quickly growing a network of over 40,000+ fans worldwide.

Provhat & Chandé spoke to the prolific DJ & Broadcaster, living legend and one true queen of the spiciest blends all the way back in the midst of winter 2020, which our esteemed interviewee attests was “two Manara’s ago”.

"Fear of a Brown Planet takes it’s name from the Kalyanji & Anandji track of the same name released on ‘Bombay the Hard Way: Guns, Cars & Sitars,’ a release put together in 1998 by DJ Dan the Automator, in which these tracks were remixed (of sorts) and largely served as the famous Bollywood production duo’s foray into a western audience.

Asian Underground today is a term, that to me defines South Asian artists operating outside the mainstream, who represent the diaspora in a society within which we have had to assimilate and an industry where we are under represented. Some may see it as a term of oppression, others may wear it proudly.

I’ve chosen to pay homage to Asian Underground, primarily through dance music from the 80s to the present day, trying as much as possible to maintain generational and gender balance. "

Our second Asian Underground mix comes courtesy of Adnan Afghani, who takes use through some of the darker ends of the movement blending classics and currents. 

"The Sounds of the Asian Underground was more than just an amalgamation of sounds. It was the film that lined the eyes of a generation caught between the memories of colonization and postcolonial Britain. Music that tracks the route carved into the empire’s tentacles and the roots laid in children flung far across the globe with an imagined home in alien terrain. As time moves and distances widen, this mix represents an engagement with a lineage of artists who have been inspired by their place in between the lines of history's movements."
