Ashland Mines, AKA Total Freedom, AKA Big Gay Idiot DJ, AKA Bobby Beethoven, is one of the best and most influential DJs of the 21st century. Starting out at pioneering parties like Mustache Mondays and Wildness (which he cofounded with Wu Tsang)—and a regular at GHE20G0TH1K—Mines helped to define the style that would become known, however cringe-inducingly, as experimental club or deconstructed club, directly inspiring fellow visionaries like Arca. 

Like some of the best DJs before him, Mines uses the CDJs as an instrument, but that doesn't mean just fancy tricks and looping. Instead, he artfully throws together clashing sounds—effects, samples, monologues, pop and R&B acapellas, and beats that run the gamut from dancehall to kuduro to breaks and techno. He's not afraid of the grotesquerie of human life and movement (just check out the monologue at the beginning of this mix), and he likes to push buttons. Once he put on a party where dancing wasn't allowed. Some of his sets are intentionally anxiety-inducing, evoking horror movies and modern classical composers like Penderecki, while others are bouncy and ebullient, weaving between genres and tempos like an old-school platformer. The best are both.

On Mines's RA Podcast—a milestone 900th in the series—he shows off this inimitable style, sharpened and reinforced over a decade-and-a-half of playing some of the world's best parties, fashion shows, you name it. He's the kind of DJ who creates his own music as he goes along. He makes you hear old tracks—especially pop music and R&B—in a whole new way. Titled "Cursed Piercing," this is a near-hour of controlled chaos that'll confound you at one moment and deeply move you the next.

NYC’s nightlife muse Sausha unveils debut EP on Halcyon Veil, a sonic homage to her latin roots, underground rave culture, and life experiences. 

New York City’s underground icon and DJ powerhouse Sausha (a.k.a. Sausha De La Ossa) is set to release her debut EP on forward-thinking experimental label Halcyon Veil. The Colombia-born, Miami-bred, and NYC-based artist has long been a defining force in the city’s nightlife, blending dark techno, ambient, and Latin club into sets that have earned her a cult following. Now, she translates her boundary-pushing sound into a body of work that’s as personal as it is incendiary.

The EP is a culmination of Sausha’s journey—a sonic tapestry woven from her Colombian roots, growing up in Miami, and a decade of refining her craft in New York’s underground. “The EP combines all of my influences up to this point,” Sausha explains. “From the classic Latin music of my childhood—salsa, cumbia, reggaeton, champeta—to the chaotic energy of American subcultures and experimental electronic music, this is a reflection of the people and moments that shaped me.”

Drawing inspiration from industrial punk pioneers like Atari Teenage Riot (whose vocalist Hanin Elias is sampled on the EP), Death in June, and Chaosy, Sausha’s debut is raw and unapologetic. The lead single ‘TRAMPA (COAST)’ releases with a music video, a glimpse into her alluring world.

While she has established herself as a NYC favorite and recently graced Boiler Room’s screen, she has also toured in Europe playing at the likes of Evian Christ’s Trance Party and Club Stamina in London, Herrensauna and Creamcake in Berlin, and beyond. Her sets, described by FACT as “a high-velocity rush of sleaze, sweat, and sirens,” have cemented her as a global fixture in the experimental club scene.

Precious Metals Vol.1 is the inaugural compilation from Precious Metals, a label, radio show, and club night.

Since its debut as a radio show on London’s NTS in 2012, Precious Metals has been committed to showcasing  the outer reaches of experimental club music, both locally and globally. Under the direction of DJ and producer Endgame—emerging from South London’s pioneering club collectives Bala Club and Endless. The platform has been focused on capturing the organic cross-pollination of sounds from the inner-city and the sublime chaos of the present moment.

In 2020, Precious Metals evolved into a full-fledged label, seeking to unearth artists that are visionaries on their own terms, eschewing conventional genre limitations. Representing an international roster of uncompromising, iconoclastic artists both established and emerging. Bringing an emotionally charged vulnerability to club culture.

The compilation encapsulates this ethos, and ambition, the culmination of the past 12 years of endeavour. Featuring some of the legends and emerging stars of electronic music.

United in compassion and solidarity for the Palestinian cause and its ongoing humanitarian crisis, all proceeds from the album will be donated to support efforts toward humanitarian aid in Gaza, and Palestinian emancipation.
