This mix was made using only my dad's records.  Every one of them an original pressing, stuff he bought when he was about as old as I am now--give or take a decade.  My dad never played an instrument really, and my mom always joked that he was actually tone-deaf.  But man, what a taste in music--and in his own way, what an ear too.  My dad could tell you who was playing drums and what year the record was made after hearing the first 2 bars of a song.  Maybe his mind never quite figured out how to communicate with his hands or his voice in a musical way--but he certainly had a mind for music.  

Some of these records were his favorites, some of them are my favorites, and some of them I listened to for the first time while I was putting this mix together--discovering new favorites.

On this week's Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast, we head back to one of our favourite musical cities, Detroit, for a session from one of techno’s fore-founders. 

Eddie Fowlkes, the self styled 'Godfather Of Tech Soul', has been at the heart of the techno music scene since it began. Releasing the Goodbye Kiss single on Juan Atkins’s Metroplex back in 1986, Eddie ‘Flashin’ Fowlkes has since gone on to record for some of the most legendary labels, such as Tresor, 430 West, Peacefrog, paper Recordings as well as his own labels City Boy Records and Detroit Wax. 

And Eddie continues to push his sound, this year with tracks coming on Desolat and Detroit Wax, an appearance at this years Movement Festival in Detroit, a summer booking at DC10 and plenty of European dates, Eddie shows no sign of letting up.

Self-described “indigo child” and ATLien Raury has made a big noise in 2014: world-takeover interviews, impromptu “#AntiTour” shows and his music’s unique blend of folk, astral gospel and rootless pop. Now the 18-year-old songwriter (profiled here) has compiled a post-genre mix for Dazed that scales the breadth of his inspiration, from contemporaries like Lorde to personal faves Jay Electronica, Rhye and – no joke – 2000s emo-poppers The All-American Rejects. The highlight has to be the seamless (well, almost seamless) transition from Bon Iver’s spectral gloomfest “Minnesota, WI” into the salubrious stomp of Kylie’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” apparently procured in grainy mp3 form from a P2P download.

Not a Morning Person — Angela invite Matris

This week's Source to Cycle podcast comes from our dear friend and fellow Chilean, Dinky AKA Alejandra Iglesias.  A move to Manhattan, NYC in the late 90s exposed her to the heritage sounds of American house and techno music, and quickly propelled her production and DJ career.  

A move to Berlin in the 2000s saw her music soar, hooking up with Sven Vath's Cocoon label, and really starting to have a great impact on the house music scene.  Releases for labels like Visionquest, Wagon Repair and Crosstown Rebels have brought her to a wider audience, and her DJ sets are always a very special moment.  

So it's an honour to have Dinky guest on our Source to Cycle podcast this week, especially as we are gifted with a special vocal set on the Cycle mix ....enjoy....oh, and don't forget to check her upcoming album on Visionquest this April!
