twominds records first venture comes in the form of Corners debut EP; Retrovision. The three track genre-spanning release takes influence from the sounds of yesteryear – think classic pads, acid leads and Roland drum machines. The result is a diverse delivering of tracks suitable for the club or home listening.

One eye in the rear vision mirror and one fixed firmly ahead, ‘La Piano’ is the definitive club banger of the release. Its fast paced M1 piano married with classic 909 drums get the feet shuffling, before the second half of the track offers a dousing of acid to add some intensity.

The title track, ‘Retrovision’, is a mellowed out cut that’s as suitable for the walk home as it is for the club. Taking influence from pioneering artists Pacific State and Orbital, Retrovision’s minimally styled composition is drizzled with dubbed out piano chords and meditative atmospheres.

‘The Loop’ is on the more soulful side and is reminiscent of enduring 90’s House. Classic organ bass is united with crunchy drums, flavoursome piano stabs and tension building strings to create a groovy floor filler.

Party-starter Chrissy joins the Shall Not Fade family with a 4-track serotonin hit which draws on influences from his home in San Francisco as well as the scene in the UK.

‘You Don’t Have To Worry’ encompasses this fusion, with anthemic piano chords and uplifting vocals that enliven a swung breaks instrumental. ‘Assure Us There’s A Heaven’ and ‘If I Could’ also come with plenty of swing, borrowing tropes from UK Funky to show house at its most danceable, whilst ‘All These Dreams’ is a modern take on old school vocal house.

Earth Boys are back with their third Shall Not Fade release, once again blessing us with a warm, tonal, percussive house cut straight out of their hometown of Brooklyn. 

Earth Boys form part of a rich lineage of New York house duos. Two that specifically warrant comparison are Masters At Work with their latin jazz-inspired house and more recently, AceMoMa with their tuneful, lysergic offerings. ‘Froggy’s World’ comes with an assortment of different flavours, beginning with swung deep house grooves on the A-side and mutating into 808 State-esque tribal house with dynamic percussion. Finally, ‘Bonita’ is a sultry 100BPM number that cruises along a dembow rhythm.

twominds Records second venture comes in the form of Patella’s debut EP; Natural Pathways. The four-track release prioritises percussion, while still finding space for lush pads and organic elements.

Lake Street is a low-slung number featuring snappy drums and a glitchy underlying texture. Subtle touches of rhoads piano paired playfully with organ hits round out the groove. The midway point of the track sees the addition of a ripping 909 hat, driving the track forward.

Where’s Bongo? pairs well with copious amounts of sunshine and a cold beer. A true summer number, the track is propelled by live saxophone courtesy of Rachael Travaille, and as the name would suggest, an array of hand drums!

Plastic Portal sees Patella team up with harvo to produce a composition for the time traveler. The standout element of the track is the otherworldly pad, which has caught dancefloor dwellers with their eyes closed and hands up.

The title track of the EP, Natural Pathways is of slight eastern influence. Lively trumpet stabs andcrashing snares drive this track while perky percussive elements create an ever-evolving soundscape.

Just three years ago, the urgency of recognising Amy Dabbs’ talent was wide spread by Special Request, who included her track ‘Allure’ in his notable Splurgecore compilation. The word quickly got around, and since then her career has been a steep uphill trajectory with sets at Hor Berlin, collaborations with the likes of Coco Bryce, and countless features on BBC Radio 1 Dance.

The Bobcat Special EP demonstrates why, and proves her stylistic ambidexterity as she strays from her signature jungle-focused sound in favour of one centred on house. Through the course of four tracks, Dabbs incorporates ravey piano chords, soulful vocals and bubbly melodies into fun, strutting rhythms.
