Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

2015's “Diversified” album proved unequivocally that Tantrum Desire has a spectrum-spanning palette to draw from. What with the undercurrent of deep house influence running through the tracklist and the excursions through tech, jungle and old skool sounds, it's clear that TD refuse to be pinned down to one classification.

One of the tracks that made a huge impression across raves and airwaves was “Pump”, championed by some of the biggest DJs on the scene from the moment it surfaced. Now, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have stepped up to reconfigure it for this series of remixes. So, we already know it's going to be killing off dances for the second time around.

DBS stamp their signature on the track right from the first note. Cinematic horns sculpt the intro into an epic, hands-in-the-air moment. And then it's all about the build. Arpeggiation meets the eponymous FXed vocal sample with a stomping kick progression to leave us in no doubt an almighty drop is coming.

The original version matched sparse drums with percussive plucks of synth-bass to create an irresistible skankers workout. This remix takes the elements and rearranges them into expert energy-building format. Drumsound & Bassline Smith begin with that stripped-back trap-style bass and beat and proceed to add complexity every sixteen bars. As it shifts up through the gears, this track takes the dance's hype levels with it.

These “Diversified” remixes continue the story that the LP started. The initial tracks demonstrated the multiple facets of Tantrum Desire's sound and now, even more layers have been revealed. This is an array of tunes equipped for every selector's set-list.

It's become clear that Tantrum Desire's debut album project, “Diversified”, had way more high-octane in the tank than was revealed when it first dropped in 2015. Monumental though it was, the succession of nitro-charged remixes that we've been treated to show that those sounds have a lot more to offer. And now one of the indisputably biggest names in drum and bass music has joined in the action. Yes, BBC Radio 1 and Shogun Audio's very own Friction has reported for remix duty.

“Genesis”, in its original form, was one of the breakout hits of the album, and is set to reach those heights again. Friction stamps his authority on the track immediately, and reconfigures the elements into a savagely gritty and grimy intro. Dark swathes of bass and ominous pads leave no uncertainty: this is going to be heavy. The point is driven home by a massive, rumbling kick-build, pushing the rave's anticipation off the scale.

The version we all know was marked out by those bouncy swing-time beats, and Friction delivers them in all their irresistible glory. The sharp call-and-response between high and low-end emphasises the groove even further. Friction's retained all that dancefloor energy, while adding his own extra twist of filth in the bassline.

We couldn't help skanking out to the original and this remix is just be as addictively floor-filling. With this most recent chapter of the “Diversified” story, one of the scene's heavyweights has proved that there are still twists in the tale. Another one for discerning selectors on all sides of the scene.

Give & Take

Drum & Bass duo DC Breaks have made their way onto the widest range of playlists. Their hardcore club cuts have been rewound by the likes of DJ Friction and Andy C. On the other hand, the songwriting ability displayed on the single ‘Faithless’, featuring Bianca, has plastered them all over the radio. That’s just the tip of a very large iceberg. DC Breaks have earned their stripes in the underground but, with an album due in the Autumn and a packed festival season ahead, they’re about to explode onto the international stage in a spectacular fashion.

Since signing to Andy C’s Ram Records they’ve carved a reputation for delivering world class remixes for some of the biggest names in pop. Their work on singles by Paloma Faith, Lady Gaga, Lana del Rey, Tinie Tempah and others, and production for Example (a cut on the ‘Playing in the Shadows’ album) woke the pair up to the possibilities offered by vocalists. It was the start of the journey that led to the forthcoming album, packed with crossover cuts such as the piano-led ‘Breathe’ featuring Dave Gibson, with its contagious, urgent chorus. Or the soulful explosion of ‘No One Like You’ sung with passion by Niara Scarlett. Or the epic blast of ‘Salvation’ wherein DC Breaks take heavy duty bass sounds and tie them to uplifting, irresistible vocal hooks.

Once they graduated to Ram itself, with monster cuts such as ‘Shaman’ and last year’s battering ‘Lock-In’, they hit the drum & bass A-league. Before long it wasn’t just the drum & bass scene paying attention. DC Breaks tunes made it onto BBC Radio via Zane Lowe, Mistajam and Annie Mac.

“Chase and Status opened the door to drum & bass being accepted in the mainstream,” says Dan, “and through that door went DJ Fresh, Wilkinson, and now us.”

It certainly looks that way with appearances at multiple 2015 festivals, including UKF, NASS, SW4 and Glastonbury.

“I love the wildness of festivals,” says Dan, “Like we played on Arcadia’s outdoor stage last New Year’s Eve, in this big tower with fire blasting out of it. I was literally three or four feet directly underneath the flame-thrower in a really small box. If something goes wrong we were literally toast!”

If DC Breaks can avoid being fried by flame-throwers, the summer will be theirs. By the end of 2015, with their debut album blowing up everywhere, the year might well be too.
