This track was inspired by my trips to Germany, and Austria, and spending time with guys like Phace and Mefjus. The name represents the swinging bassline, two notes in tandem with each other, having a call and response. I loved the visual image it brings, but the track was only an idea when a good friend convinced me to finish it. Simplistic, but straight to the point.

When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

2015's “Diversified” album proved unequivocally that Tantrum Desire has a spectrum-spanning palette to draw from. What with the undercurrent of deep house influence running through the tracklist and the excursions through tech, jungle and old skool sounds, it's clear that TD refuse to be pinned down to one classification.

One of the tracks that made a huge impression across raves and airwaves was “Pump”, championed by some of the biggest DJs on the scene from the moment it surfaced. Now, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have stepped up to reconfigure it for this series of remixes. So, we already know it's going to be killing off dances for the second time around.

DBS stamp their signature on the track right from the first note. Cinematic horns sculpt the intro into an epic, hands-in-the-air moment. And then it's all about the build. Arpeggiation meets the eponymous FXed vocal sample with a stomping kick progression to leave us in no doubt an almighty drop is coming.

The original version matched sparse drums with percussive plucks of synth-bass to create an irresistible skankers workout. This remix takes the elements and rearranges them into expert energy-building format. Drumsound & Bassline Smith begin with that stripped-back trap-style bass and beat and proceed to add complexity every sixteen bars. As it shifts up through the gears, this track takes the dance's hype levels with it.

These “Diversified” remixes continue the story that the LP started. The initial tracks demonstrated the multiple facets of Tantrum Desire's sound and now, even more layers have been revealed. This is an array of tunes equipped for every selector's set-list.

Celebrating two decades in business, Technique Recordings have opened up the vaults and handed out the stems of some of their biggest tunes to some of the sickest producers around. We had warnings of what was to come with DC Breaks' remix of Tantrum Desire's 'Airhead' and Glitch City's take on Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Skumbag', and cuts from this album have been shelling down raves and festivals all summer.

Now, here's what we've been waiting for.

This album, spanning the full twenty years of Technique history, showcases the real strength and depth of the catalogue. Anthems like Crissy Criss & Youngman's 'Kick Snare', Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'Crossfire' and Tantrum Desire's 'Reach' all get reconfigured to take heads off all over again. The bossmen have even resurrected their Future Tech moniker to give a 2019 upgrade to TECH 001.

And the array of remixers recruited take us all the way across the spectrum of contemporary drum 'n' bass. The likes of Bladerunner and Marky rub shoulders with AMC and The Prototypes...this album is as musically multi-faceted as it is star-studded. Not to mention solid support from the likes of Friction, Ed Rush, Optical and co. Fusing sounds and bass and breakbeat production rhythms that make you get up and dance, the guys told KMag recently 'We're up early, it's our job and we try to keep it serious and write beats on a daily basis.' Clearly no slacking for these two then!

Drum & Bass duo DC Breaks have made their way onto the widest range of playlists. Their hardcore club cuts have been rewound by the likes of DJ Friction and Andy C. On the other hand, the songwriting ability displayed on the single ‘Faithless’, featuring Bianca, has plastered them all over the radio. That’s just the tip of a very large iceberg. DC Breaks have earned their stripes in the underground but, with an album due in the Autumn and a packed festival season ahead, they’re about to explode onto the international stage in a spectacular fashion.

Since signing to Andy C’s Ram Records they’ve carved a reputation for delivering world class remixes for some of the biggest names in pop. Their work on singles by Paloma Faith, Lady Gaga, Lana del Rey, Tinie Tempah and others, and production for Example (a cut on the ‘Playing in the Shadows’ album) woke the pair up to the possibilities offered by vocalists. It was the start of the journey that led to the forthcoming album, packed with crossover cuts such as the piano-led ‘Breathe’ featuring Dave Gibson, with its contagious, urgent chorus. Or the soulful explosion of ‘No One Like You’ sung with passion by Niara Scarlett. Or the epic blast of ‘Salvation’ wherein DC Breaks take heavy duty bass sounds and tie them to uplifting, irresistible vocal hooks.

Once they graduated to Ram itself, with monster cuts such as ‘Shaman’ and last year’s battering ‘Lock-In’, they hit the drum & bass A-league. Before long it wasn’t just the drum & bass scene paying attention. DC Breaks tunes made it onto BBC Radio via Zane Lowe, Mistajam and Annie Mac.

“Chase and Status opened the door to drum & bass being accepted in the mainstream,” says Dan, “and through that door went DJ Fresh, Wilkinson, and now us.”

It certainly looks that way with appearances at multiple 2015 festivals, including UKF, NASS, SW4 and Glastonbury.

“I love the wildness of festivals,” says Dan, “Like we played on Arcadia’s outdoor stage last New Year’s Eve, in this big tower with fire blasting out of it. I was literally three or four feet directly underneath the flame-thrower in a really small box. If something goes wrong we were literally toast!”

If DC Breaks can avoid being fried by flame-throwers, the summer will be theirs. By the end of 2015, with their debut album blowing up everywhere, the year might well be too.
