As a team Modified Motion and Faction have been making waves in the drum and bass scene for quite some time now, their tunes are always certified dancefloor bangers, always hitting the top spots in the D&B download charts, and regularly gaining airplay from the likes of Grooverider, Hazard, Majistrate to name a few.

One of their most recognisable tracks to date has been the huge 2 Bags Of Grass, a funky swing beat number that gained anthem status at Innovation In The Sun & In The Dam parties last the year when it was released, and this is your chance to give it a remix!

With only a few more singles left until Crissy Criss unleashes the full extent of his hard graft, having spent locked down in the studio, 2019 is shaping up to be the producer’s biggest year. And this is no small statement, as Crissy Criss has been a building brick within the drum & bass wall for quite some time. From the tender age of eleven, he was brought onto the pirate radio airwaves of Kool FM by step-dad Kenny Ken and since then his career snowballed. After standing as the figurehead of Radio 1’s trend setting drum & bass show, he’s remained one of the most recognisable names throughout the genre, both through his support of its music and his own productions.
 
His ‘War on Silence’ album, named after his own imprint which he launched in 2018, he draws together the most prominent selections he’s been fashioning in the confines of his studio. He’s already shown his influence throughout the wider dance music sphere through his LP collaborations alongside the likes of Funtcase, trap duo Wide Future, Malux, Erb N Dub, London outfit Orange Hill plus many more producers who have shaped their own musical subsections. Although for the next release in his ‘War on Silence’ reveal, Crissy Criss has asked Heist to merge his intimidating bass weight behind Crissy’s own finely tuned style. 
Hesit also isn’t a stranger to the drum & bass circuit, with his music having revolutionised its sound over the past twenty years, gracing the catalogues of Charge, Ganja, Frontline, Full Cycle, Digital Soundboy and Metalheadz throughout his career. ‘Rumble’ is a no-holds-barred look at what the producers have at their disposal when they join forces. There’s a groove which claws from underneath the track’s tightly composed mix and with every smashing layer, it becomes more and more difficult to pull yourself away due to its stabbing hooks. ‘Rumble’ lends itself to the dark segments of ‘War on Silence’ and shows there will be more dancefloor destroyers coming from Crissy Criss - this is an LP which will take you through a landscape built off the scene Crissy Criss has played a huge part in.

One of the UK’s freshest new drum & bass talents drops his debut solo single on Critical, this one is simple mammoth! Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made.
The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic.
Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013...bad to the bone!

Drum & Bass duo DC Breaks have made their way onto the widest range of playlists. Their hardcore club cuts have been rewound by the likes of DJ Friction and Andy C. On the other hand, the songwriting ability displayed on the single ‘Faithless’, featuring Bianca, has plastered them all over the radio. That’s just the tip of a very large iceberg. DC Breaks have earned their stripes in the underground but, with an album due in the Autumn and a packed festival season ahead, they’re about to explode onto the international stage in a spectacular fashion.

Since signing to Andy C’s Ram Records they’ve carved a reputation for delivering world class remixes for some of the biggest names in pop. Their work on singles by Paloma Faith, Lady Gaga, Lana del Rey, Tinie Tempah and others, and production for Example (a cut on the ‘Playing in the Shadows’ album) woke the pair up to the possibilities offered by vocalists. It was the start of the journey that led to the forthcoming album, packed with crossover cuts such as the piano-led ‘Breathe’ featuring Dave Gibson, with its contagious, urgent chorus. Or the soulful explosion of ‘No One Like You’ sung with passion by Niara Scarlett. Or the epic blast of ‘Salvation’ wherein DC Breaks take heavy duty bass sounds and tie them to uplifting, irresistible vocal hooks.

Once they graduated to Ram itself, with monster cuts such as ‘Shaman’ and last year’s battering ‘Lock-In’, they hit the drum & bass A-league. Before long it wasn’t just the drum & bass scene paying attention. DC Breaks tunes made it onto BBC Radio via Zane Lowe, Mistajam and Annie Mac.

“Chase and Status opened the door to drum & bass being accepted in the mainstream,” says Dan, “and through that door went DJ Fresh, Wilkinson, and now us.”

It certainly looks that way with appearances at multiple 2015 festivals, including UKF, NASS, SW4 and Glastonbury.

“I love the wildness of festivals,” says Dan, “Like we played on Arcadia’s outdoor stage last New Year’s Eve, in this big tower with fire blasting out of it. I was literally three or four feet directly underneath the flame-thrower in a really small box. If something goes wrong we were literally toast!”

If DC Breaks can avoid being fried by flame-throwers, the summer will be theirs. By the end of 2015, with their debut album blowing up everywhere, the year might well be too.
