New Wave Podcast 042: Tommy 2000

Quite impressively, 17 year old Tom Scannell has been able to convey his own vision of electronic music, taking inspiration from UK sounds both past and present and is embodied through his Tommy 2000 alias. Having already carved out a resume that any young artist would only dream of, he continues to strive for his next move in the industry. His music has already gathered the attention of some of the scenes biggest names and with the firm backing of Shampain and Kettama, he is ready to solidify himself as more than an up and comer. 

Unlike most, Tom was exposed to electronic music at a rather young age, with his Dad being an avid raver in the 80s/90s, meaning he was able to absorb all of his knowledge and love for the scene. He oozes creativity and passion meaning his progression as a producer has been fast and although his music has already touched different genres, he has zoned in on a sound heavily influenced by Floating Points. 

We recently caught up with Tommy to discuss the influence his parents had on his music, entering a club for the first time, learning GarageBand whilst on holiday and the overwhelming support on his tracks.

Introducing our new podcast series Cued Up - listen back to our recent virtual chat with none other than Dublin’s own DJ and Producer, R.kitt.

R.Kitt is a DJ/producer from Dublin who has been making music for the last decade and has played extensively on the Irish festival and club circuit, including international gigs in London and Berlin. He’s also well known for hosting a local collective night called Dip with friends Cáit, Enda and Jenn, in a community arts space called Jigsaw. With a string of EP releases on local and international labels to his name, his focus has recently shifted to working alongside Sunil Sharpe on the Give Us the Night campaign since 2018. Over the next few months, he hopes to work on building a sound system and look into alternative spaces where people can gather and listen to electronic music. As well as this, if the pandemic anxiety allows for it, hopefully, he’ll release some more music and share a few mixes that aim to get you moving a bit faster on your bike. 

Robbie chats to Robert and Rossa from the society, focusing on topics in the nightlife industry such as mental health, writer’s block, the Give Us The Night campaign, as well a few funny stories from over the years. The closing mix is provided by our own society member Mark Colclough.
