koi sum is a multi-genre artist from Bulgaria. Residing in Chicago for nearly all his life,  and always feeling such a strong connection with music and the need to be a bigger part of it, koi started off playing bass six years ago. Five years ago, he became interested in how to produce electronic music as well. Starting the journey off with creating house music under an old alias, koi eventually got bored of it and expanded to new genres and creativity. The koi sum project was born and with each release, koi approaches new levels of skill, passion, dedication, and no plans of stopping.

"I would say what inspired me to make music was just a random curiosity I had one day about how electronic music was made. So I looked it up and saw some videos of various producers using Ableton, Cubase, FL, and other DAWs as well and it was fascinating to me" - koi sum says. "I bought myself an interface that came with a version of Cubase and attempted to play around in there while recording myself play bass and stuff. From that point on I got sucked in with how expansive and interesting it was for me and I stuck with it since then. My biggest influences at this point in time are Nitepunk, Mr. Bill, Azaleh, and Sublab. I love all of those artists for various reasons. Their production styles I think are fun to listen to and are always inspiring for me in one way or another."

Now, come sit tight, and don’t say a word. M!NGO makes his return to vibe.digital with a two-track single, which highlight the all-encompassing nature of his production style, and exuding a mastery of emotion–and technique.

A true dichotomy, these two contrasting tracks not have understated contradictions within themselves. First, “Botnet” opens with gentle waves of sound and airy melodies, which leaves listeners no choice but to melt into the music and feel their worries dissipate… but the song does so in a way that’s almost like a subtle brainwashing. It’s as if “Botnet” coaxes you into letting your guard down. On the other hand, “La Morte” takes listeners on a journey through more anxious territory, with its contemplative, cyclic movement and piercing foreground notes. The clear, direct instruction given in the vocal sample provides this second track with more of a trustworthy, benevolent vibe–despite its unsettling exterior.

The third installment of Plastician's Wavepool series sees 33 tracks land on Terrorhythm, five years on from the initial mix that sparked conversation about the genre's potential.

Fast forward to 2020 and the sound and community surrounding "Wave" has grown and splintered into offshoots such as "Hardwave" which has seen the sound adopted by DJ's more likely to be found in huge concert stages than small dark basement venues. With community still at the heart of the sound, this compilation rings truer to the origins of the genre, with nods to the future, brighter end of the Wave scape throughout the compilation. Producers from 3 continents are represented - documenting the scene's growth way beyond the circles it one operated within. As the sound metamorphosises from URL to IRL, it's clear to hear how varied the style has become since the previous Wavepool outing in 2017, with Eastern Europe's flashes of Trance influence dancing in tandem with the UK's Grime and Garage influence, as well of course as the tried and tested foundations built on the USA's Trap rhythms and drum samples.

With the genre moving at a rapid pace, Plastician's ear for the smoother end of the sound keeps a tight grip on the majority of the selections in hand, but we are reminded of just how bright and colourful this genre can be with bursts of energy throughout the compilation - bringing a well rounded taster for any curious ears out there.

The Wave is certainly not just a classroom exercise....
