I have to say, I don't understand why people are so enamorated with labels. There is a reason why fusionism is often not regarded as "populism". Fusionism is a clear term, it refers to that movement in American history specifically. "Populism" on the other hand has been used by or to denote several movements through history and borders for some movement alledgely about "the people" (whoever the people is and whatever defines them) as opposed to traditional ruling elites or wannabe ones. It is a generic umbrella term, today it is only associated more with modern right wing populism in everyday language because it is the one more proeminently active (but not if you're academic). What it is is a collection of barely related clusters of movements. Let the word go, people, you gain nothing by trying to cleanse the word itself for the sake of it.
