NEUD PHOTO aka Nico Nightingale, prolific electro/industrial/wave producer with an extensive discography. A NYC native, now living in Barcelona, Nico Nightingale’s solo project, Neud Photo, boasts a dossier of releases on various labels including EYA/Lonewolf, Bordello a Parigi, Frigio,and Rat Life to name a few, alongside a formidable catalog of additional projects, including Suicide AFTR 7, XEROX, Polymer, Ceci N'est Pas, and Wall $treet. Nico boasts a dossier of releases on various labels and it's safe to say he’s making waves with his sound. The synth enthusiast travels back and forth between New Beat, Acid, Leftfield and Chicago House with rugged melodies and gloomy basslines alongside some unexpected drops, all together building a relentless essence. Nico is a talented artist with a healthy addiction to hardware serving up another great example of electronic music. His side project, Suicide AFTR 7, has an upcoming EP on EYA Records later this year.

TORMENTED MIX MAY 2024

Hey all. So this edition of the show is bittersweet, as like many of you, I'm dealing with the death of Steve Albini. A person who has had a HUGE impact on the music many of us love. His death has hit hard, harder than I would have expected but that is the power of sound I suppose. It impacts you deeper than you think.

Albini's career of work is large, and I've just scratched the surface here. I hope that I've introduced you to some new artists and sounds, whilst reminding you of others. Big thanks out to everyone who suggested tracks.

Producing a special like this - trying to sum up the career of a musician and engineer whose work has been across so much sound that has in turn made up a chunk of my understanding and enjoyment of sound is always gonna fall short. But it has been cathartic putting this together, and broadcasting it as I have. 

You could spend many hours on just one of the many, many bands he worked with. Let alone his own material as Big Black, and Shellac. And I suggest you should.

A Strange Transmission Episode - AWWD265 - djset - techno - electronic music

Daniel Osthues, DJ & creator of the radio show Addicted-2-Bass discovered his passion for rough Detroit Techno/Electro at the age of 14.

From that moment on, intense digging sessions in nearby Underground Record shops became a weekly ritual.

The passion for new music while at the same time watching his favourite DJs spin records with incredible skill soon led to the goal to be in the same position one day.

Gaining the necessary skillset over the years, he soon found himself spinning at DJ contests and being invited to local Underground music stations as a guest DJ.

Drawing upon an expansive record collection, his sets nowadays span from classic early 90’s Cybotron informed Electro to some rare gems from the hard-hitting Berlin, Detroit & The Hague scene.

Besides having played at Golzheim, Düsseldorf, and Open Source Radio (NL) Daniel is a co-founder of District.

Today we are proud to present a compilation of C Mantle's released and unreleased work. Despite a rhythmic and sonic palette that creates a false sense of overload, his style with machine funk swagger has a recognizable signature.
C Mantle has been producing and releasing electronic music for over two decades, focusing on hip-hop (as Opine Ko$insky), techno, breakcore, IDM, electro and speedcore. He has been released by Earwiggle, Electrix, Cathartic Noize Experience, Mindcut, Kaer Uiks, Underground Perversions and many others. He runs Acre Recordings (https://acrerecordings.bandcamp.com/music) and has played gigs, free parties and festivals across the UK, Ireland, Germany and Latvia.

Which artists has influenced you the most? 

- My influences are broad but a key one for IDM is, of course, Autechre, especially their era from LP5/EP7 to Untilted. Following the release of my first album in 2021, Anatomically Correct [Acre Recordings], Darkfloor commissioned an 'Influences' mix which pretty much sums it all up. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future? 

- Slightly oddly, along with writing IDM (and various other genre), I also produce speedcore. My second EP on France's Underground Perversions came out in April 2024, with a second EP due out much later in the year on Switzerland's Cathartic Noize Experience. There is also likely to be a techno release on London's Darkfloor at some point in 2024.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 

- Autechre's back catalogue will always be vitally relevant. However, I'm always keen to discover artists who are inventive, pushing boundaries and have excellent production skills. The dauntingly talented Sunken Foal springs to mind (Fallen Arches is peerless, with deeply impressive production), along with Berlin's Death Cascade who beautifully and impressively combine flashcore with IDM and a little techno: their music is highly immersive and visual. As my own music is a little intense I tend to listen to a lot of drone, ambient, minimal and experimental music. Astral Industries are my current go-to label for ambient (and what incredible artwork).

What inspires you now to create music? 

- Given a recent addition to our family, music production is currently on the back burner. But the inspiration will always be the same: assuaging that visceral and physical need to be creative and produce, in addition to hearing some deeply impressive work from established and underground artists.

What set-up do you use when creating music? 

- It's a pretty standard set up using mostly Ableton with the odd bit of hardware, such as the Volca FM and a wee imitation 303, the MAM. For me, it's always been about the speakers and headphones and I'm lucky enough to have some amazing Lyd48s and a pair of Avantone Planar headphones.
