deafcandance @ Summer Contrast 2023 | Paradiso Stage

Each time I perform at Audioriver Festival, I strive to give each of my mixes a unique character, different from the previous one. This time was no different as I was closing the Chill Stage on a Sunday morning, from three to five o'clock.

In this case, I set myself the goal of raising the bar. I focused mainly on tracks I hadn't showcased before. It often happens that certain tracks reside in my collections for months, even years, before I feel that the right moment has come to present them. It's precisely when the perfect opportunity arises that I can utilize those pieces that are perfectly matched to the given moment. Such a perfect opportunity arose during my latest performance, which began at night.

The first hour featured deep, almost hypnotic sounds, woven into psychedelic tunes. In the second half of my set, as the sun began to rise, the music gradually transformed into more house-oriented vibes. My sounds encompassed a wide spectrum, blending house elements and incorporating several dynamic breaks.

deafcandance- Audioriver Festival 2023

For the past few years, on the same day, February 14th, I have been releasing "Slowlover" mixes that primarily explore very slow sounds from the broadly defined downtempo genre. Today marks the time for a change, and I present to you the first chapter of "OUTER SPICE." We start innocently, but as we venture further into the woods (or desert), the music reveals its various facets. Ultimately, each chapter will showcase different genres – from deep house/minimal to dub and ambient. The series' sounds will be unusual for clubs and require the listener's attention. With nearly 20 years of experience as a DJ, I will be presenting gems from my collection as well as new releases. The main focus of all chapters will be storytelling, forming the basis of my vision. Expect new chapters every month.

Regarding the "Slowlover" project, I'm not ending it; I'm just putting it on hold for a while. I will definitely come back to it.

Before you is another chapter of Outer Spice, where this time your musical voyage will hook you into the mysterious world of Twin Peaks. This is a very loose musical adaptation of the series' atmosphere. The mix begins uncomfortably, and ends with a snippet of a song everyone is familiar with. I wanted each song to tell its own story, something like a kaleidoscope, where the whole creates something bigger. I hope you can see my intention.

KOOKYCAST #41 - DEAF CAN DANCE born with significant hearing loss, Deaf Can Dance has never treated it as a limitation. Nearly two decades deep into the Polish electronic scene, he’s been on a continuous search — drifting through genres, exploring what lies between the lines.

He hears things differently — maybe less technically, more intuitively — and that’s exactly what makes his sets so compelling. There’s no formula. Instead of chasing trends, he weaves together hypnotic rhythms and offbeat textures to create a space where the music truly connects.

He plays to the moment. A sunrise set in the forest sounds nothing like a late-night session in a packed club. He reads the room — or the land — and lets the music speak.

He’s also the mind behind OUTER SPICE, a podcast and event series for artists who like to dig deeper. Over the years, it’s welcomed names like Adiel, Ogazon, Youandewan, Kotelett, Dave Dinger, and JUST2 — selectors who follow their own path.

He’s not here for the spotlight. He’s here for those who feel music — the ones who close their eyes when they dance.


Kooky Music Podcast #41 - DEAFCANDANCE

I recorded this mix at Summer Contrast, on Saturday from 10 PM to midnight at the Tribes Stage.
Two hours full of groove, hypnosis and tribal energy. The set included tracks from Barac, Ben Kaczor, Ben Rau, Cassy & Chris Carrier, Chris Geschwindner, DVS1, East End Dubs, Mood II Swing, Prime Minister of Doom, Sakro, Youandewan.

The last track was special. I had been holding it in my collection for a long time, waiting for the right moment. A special remix of Twin Peaks, played in tribute to David Lynch, who passed away this year. I knew I had to do it here.

This set is also an answer to those who sometimes ask me what direction I’m heading. It’s not only minimal – even though that’s where I started back in 2005–2006, before realizing that music didn’t quite fit Krakow’s dance floors at the time. Now I return to it consciously, mixing house, 90s echoes, tech house and Romanian minimal into one tribal pulse.

This is my language. And this is how I want to play.

Born with significant hearing loss, deafcandance has never treated it as a limitation. With nearly two decades behind the decks, he has become known for hypnotic, groove-driven sets that balance deep house, minimal and 90s-inspired rhythms.

His approach is purely improvisational – no formulas, no fixed playlists. A sunrise in the forest never sounds the same as a late-night club session; every set is built in the moment, shaped by the crowd and the space.

He is also the mind behind outer_spice, a Warsaw-based podcast and event series that has hosted selectors such as Adiel, Ogazon and Youandewan - artists who follow their own path.
