It’s a message to a friend who’s had a rough run: stand up, brush it off, reach for the stars, don’t look back. I’ve been there too—and with friends behind me, I bounced back.
1988 dreamers aiming to be the next big pop duo (Pani’s second cousin was George Michael—no pressure). We took different paths, stayed friends, and here we are.

“Mother’s Love” was first written back in 2014, after the passing of my mother-in-law, Betty. At the time, it was a personal song sung directly to her, asking for strength to guide her daughter — my wife, Cath — through her grief. Over the years, the lyrics have evolved, taking on a new life and deeper resonance.

Today, the track has become a haunting dark rock ballad, steeped in sorrow, strength, and raw emotion. It tells the story of a father standing beside his daughter at her mother’s funeral, holding her while silently battling his own despair. The verses brood with imagery of loss and darkness, while the chorus surges like a storm — a desperate plea for resilience, for courage, and ultimately, for the strength to let go.

I recently unearthed the very first recording I ever made, hidden away on a crumbling old cassette. I can’t even remember what I originally called the track, but I do remember it was the first piece I created on my Roland D20 back in 1989 when I was just 17 years old. I recorded this track on my trusty old Fostex 4-track machine. The tape itself was in rough shape, but after playing the tune into Suno, it worked its magic—cleaning it up and giving me this new version.

Back in 2014, I started writing a song for Stephen Sutton – the remarkable teenager who touched all our hearts at an SJP conference with his unforgettable speech, knowing he only had months left to live. His courage inspired me to release my album that year and launch it in style at London’s St James Theatre, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace. 🙏✨

The track still isn’t quite where I want it to be, but I’ll be returning to it later this year while I step back from work to start writing my upcoming book for Human Odyssey. A Tribute to Gary Numan, inspired by the track Replicas - https://youtu.be/3kdefBY9-PU

The song comes from his 1979 album Replicas, which was actually based on a half-written science-fiction novel Numan was sketching out at the time. The novel (never completed) described a near-future city controlled by machines, with humanoid “Machmen” and android “Replicas” designed to replace or control humans. Think Blade Runner vibes, but darker and more claustrophobic.

Lyrically, Replicas is about these synthetic beings who are physically similar to people but lack real human emotion or individuality. They’re manufactured to maintain control, almost like soulless replacements for us. The “you’re just a replica” line cuts straight to that eerie sense of dispossession — that humans are being swapped out for something cold, programmed, and compliant.

On another level, many fans (and Numan himself in later interviews) have said it also reflects his own feelings of disconnection at the time. He often wrote about not feeling “real” or “authentic,” being alien in his own skin. So Replicas blurs that boundary — is it about robots taking over, or about being human but feeling like a machine?

It’s dystopian, but also strangely intimate — which is why it still feels so haunting today.

“Final Voyage, Home” is a quiet, cinematic farewell — a gentle piece about arriving at the end of life and finding, improbably and beautifully, that home has been waiting for you all along. The track follows one last walk along a familiar shoreline; as the tide whispers and the light shifts, Wilf — a tuxedo cat who has gone before — pads up and sits at my side. There’s a small, wordless recognition: it’s time. Looking up, a great cruise ship appears on the horizon, bathed in warm, otherworldly light. Onboard are the faces of everyone I’ve loved and lost, and those I’ve loved and kept: a congregation of ordinary saints waiting to welcome me on my final journey.

Musically, the arrangement mirrors that slow step toward acceptance — spare piano and low strings and horns carry the weight, The track is less about drama and more about arrival: a calm, reverent goodbye that feels like a hand being taken. It’s intimate, hopeful and, at its core, grateful.

I’m Dean R. Chandler — a London based songwriter, recording artist, and storyteller. My music is rooted in a lifelong search for meaning, weaving together themes of love, loss, faith, alien contact, and humanity’s future.

My upcoming double concept album Human Odyssey (set for release in January 2027) is the culmination of decades of writing and reflection. It’s a narrative journey that begins with a search for God and ends with an encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence — exploring not only what it means to be human, but also where we might be heading as a species. Musically, it draws inspiration from the epic storytelling of Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, the synth-driven edge of Gary Numan, and the emotional depth of artists like Tori Amos and Chris de Burgh.

I previously released Time Machine – Reflecting Shattered Dreams (2014) and continue to revisit my archive of songs written across 35 years, reimagining them with today’s tools and sounds. Some pieces remain intimate and acoustic, while others expand into dark rock, industrial, or orchestral landscapes — but all are connected by a focus on emotional honesty and cinematic storytelling.

Beyond music, I’m fascinated by the intersection of creativity and technology. I’ve been experimenting with AI-driven composition and production to bring old demos to life and to spark entirely new works. For me, these tools are not replacements for human artistry but extensions of it — ways of unlocking stories and emotions that otherwise might have remained hidden.

At its heart, my work is about connection: to the past, to the future, and to the unseen mysteries of existence. Music, for me, isn’t just entertainment — it’s a chronicle of transformation, a conversation between spirit, science, and sound.
