KWELA

Quite literally the very first thing I ever composed and produced for picture back in late 2001. This little indie film was my first as a composer and this was the first thing that came out of me after my initial viewing with the director. I recorded the whole thing in my little Studio City apartment with the help of a few really generous and terrifically talented pals — including my awesome Pops on bass guitar! I remember we stuck Brad's guitar amps in my walk-in closet and my Dad sat on the side of my bed to track his bass guitar. The Hammond was rented and sat in my family room for three days until my neighbors bailed for Christmas vacation, and then we set it all up and cranked the speaker and knocked a bunch of shit off my walls. Good times!

Jeyda - 2013 instrumental mix

"Jabang Tetuko" was a fully-dimensional live theatrical presentation — the world's first to incorporate traditional Javanese wayang kulit, wayang orang, live orchestra, mixed martial arts, Hollywood stunt and wirework, and state of the art lighting effects, staging elements and pyrotechnics. I spent the first weeks of 2011 in Southeast Asia writing, orchestrating, conducting, and recording the 90 minutes of music for the soundtrack contained in the show. The score features members of the Twilight Orchestra, as well as the 32-piece "Jabang Tetuko Orchestra", the show's original group, which showcases many of Indonesia's most talented musicians and artists.

RALPHIE'S RUN (from "Sharkskin 6")

From the very first feature film I ever scored, Columbia Pictures' "Sharkskin 6". The movie was about a group of aging hit men, still stuck in their retro-1960's mobster heyday, trying to pull off one last heist so they could live out their golden years in the Bahamas.

I literally scored this entire film out of my first Los Angeles apartment bedroom. There was almost no budget, so I called in favors from friends to provide the instrumentation for my score. My drums were set up in the living room. My dad, Don Ogden, played bass on everything, which was a lot of fun. We experimented a great deal and had some really hilarious moments just goofing off and playing together. My friend Brad Strickland played all the jazz guitars and we set up his amps in my walk-in closet. LA trumpet legend Rex Merriweather came in and ripped it up on trumpet and flugelhorn, and I assembled a tight horn section through placing ads on Craigslist for players. I met my friends Jack Stafford (trombone), Lisa McLeod (alto sax), Sergio Flores (tenor sax), and Don Jones (baritone sax) through those auditions.

I spent the majority of my budget on the musicians but saved out a little to rent a Hammond B3 with a Leslie 122 because at the time (early 2004) there weren't any good software emulations of one. All I remember was it was the heaviest thing I'd ever loaded up a flight of stairs! It sat in my living room for three weeks while I finished the music for the film and I was only able to record it during the day when all my neighbors were at work because it was so damned loud. At one point, Arvan, my next-door neighbor who was a trial lawyer, came over to see what the hell the racket was. He became so intrigued with what I was doing that he told me if anyone gave me any shit he would represent me in the event of a noise ordinance lawsuit. Friends in high places!

I wrote 72 minutes of score for "Sharkskin 6" and the director Trevor King asked me to also write several songs for the film to be used as source material in certain scenes, stretching the number of minutes of music written to around 90 or so. The film played well overseas, especially in Europe, and never saw a stateside release. But the music was a ton of fun, a huge learning experience for me, and a great excuse to blow off some steam with some very talented and hardcore musicians. "Sharkskin 6" remains one of my all-time favorite scores I've done, not only for the fact that it was my first feature score, but also because I got to record with my Pop and a bunch of other top-notch LA cats.

The climactic scene from D. Lee Inosanto's "The Sensei", this cue wraps up all of the themes in my score for this terrific heartfelt drama about life, death, love and acceptance.
