My newest orchestral composition. It is comprised of two main themes which through the course of the piece take on multiple variations (mostly harmonically and tonally) until the main theme reprises in a new much more simple harmonic structure than when it was first introduced. The piece closes with both a harp cadenza and violin solo which the software doesn't play back very well, but beggars can't be choosers. I hope you enjoy listening to it (preferably with some good headphones) :)

Memories Orchestral

I started this piece before I left for school and it was finished during my first semester. It is tells the story of a young person who decides to join the military and the music is representative of the danger and horrors of combat, the call that those brave enough to serve must answer, and a mothers love and pain as she realizes she has to let her child go.

I was noodling around in the computer and came up with some basic melody and harmony that I ended up really liking. I wanted to see what I could do with them keeping the piece as simple as possible but still interesting to listen to and this is what I came up with. A short and sweet piece of music about friendship.

Silent Night Piano Solo

A composition I have composed that in my mind illustrates a team of heroes and follows them through the preparation for battle, the battle (accenting on the theme of triumph in a, hopefully, regal way) that follows through to the resolution in the form of a secondary theme which illustrates the end of the battle. It depics a sense of sucess where all the characters take a moment of silent before returning home, as the melody is restated with minor chords rather than the major chords which presided it, with the lingering thought of all the fallen combatants. The melody then starts to return to the primary theme as the rhythms become much more march like and it is all finally restated as a hero's job is never done and he/she waits until they are needed again.  

The Heroes' Theme

My first full length, completed composition for a full orchestra. This piece was composed to illustrate the remarkable image of flight. The main theme is originaly stated in a piccolo for its song-like tone and its ability to sour above all the other sounding members of the orchestra which are violins and flutes holding a C to establish the key. A solo trumpet comes in to add a regal sense to the b-section of the theme and it is all restated with the orchestra which reveals the harmonic structure of the theme. The piece is given movement as it flows from one melody to the next. The regal sense of flight is overshadowed by a tension brought out by the rhythmic ostinato in the strings and woodwinds. The brass add a punching motif which then truns into something a little more melodic. The newly introduced melody is in fact a foreshadowing of the secondary theme which I think still can be equated with flying but feels much less pure and surealistic as its predecessor. The same secondary theme then transforms into a chromatic pattern that adds a feeling of perhaps danger and it all comes together in a restatement of the main theme accented by a piccolo solo. The theme then goes through a sequence of key changes up a perfect 5th intermixed with a fanfare. After a dramatic climax the orchestra simmers down as motifs related to the main themes are brought in and out that lead us to a nice soft I to a V and then to an abrupt and loud finale. Though the piece was not written to end in a finale, I found it much more fitting with the idea of flight in mind for the piece to land softly as if it was a dream gently fluttering back down to a sleeping child. This I tried to achieve by the use of a solo piano and SATB choir which all resolves on a long, soft, and peaceful E Major chord.  

Flying Above the Stars

This piece is dedicated to Mike Osborne, the best father a best friend could have ever had. We were only about 13 or 14 when Mike passed away and I remember vividly getting the news from my mother and immediately falling to the ground and crying my eyes out. Every second brought on only more pain as I thought my best friend, my best friend who had just lost his father in the eighth grade. There is no greater felling of helplessness than in the moment when  you see your best friend suffer from the loss of a family member and you know there is absolutely nothing you will ever be able to do to fix it. Since kindergarten we had been helping each other up, but there was no up from this, there were no words of comfort and I killed me to know that my best friend would not ever have his dad at his wedding, or shed a tear of joy when his father saw his grandchild for the first time, or see him in his cap and gown at the end of high school. Mike was more than just a father, more than just a friend, and more than just a mentor, but was a good person . The kind of person that we all wish that we will have a part of in us someday. This piece was not specifically written about Mike, but was written to be a reminder to remember. A moment in time when we can all remember something that in our own hearts needs remembering. It is long overdue, and is an insignificant bandage to a wound that will never truly heal, but to you Mike I dedicate this piece. Know that you are remembered everyday in our minds and especially in our hearts. This piece was begun Wednesday, January 2, 2013 and was completed Saturday, January 5th, 2013
