The Old Neighborhood

I walk through the old neighborhood
I see no familiar faces whatsoever.
All of them are these white
Families, smiling and happy,
Starbucks in their hands.
All my friends are gone.
Is that a Mercedes?
What happened here?
All I did was move out for college,
Come back an’ everyone’s gone.

There’s an old man,
I recognize him,
Old Man Abe.
He’s still around?
Guess Social Security’s kept him afloat.
I ask him what’s up.
What happened.
He says these people,
Came up from the city,
Raised the rents.
Opened their vegan coffee shops.
Now all there is is white folks
With their Starbucks and Mercedes.
All the people that made this place home,
Gone off to another city, upriver,
Where no one wants to live.
Oh yes, the town, it’s definitely more prosperous.
Ain’t got that culture though.
It’s been gentrified.

The city I knew is gone.
Mom and Dad are thinkin’ of moving
Can’t afford rent anymore.
I walk through what was a shitty part of town.
What happened to the Jamaican flags?
The smell of curry in the air.
Oh I see a non-white person.
Grabbing lunch on the way to an office job, though
They’re demolishing that old house.
Other places are being flipped.
I miss the old neighborhood.
The sounds of Latin music
And old school Hip-Hop.
Guess I gotta find somewhere else.
Before these rich white folks get to it.
