I think that with the notion of imagining people complexly, it doesn't mean that you should imagine the opposite of the thing that they seem to be: Like, imagining someone as a pleasant person to other people, but who is secretly a murderer in the shadows... like, it's more the sense of "We all do good things and bad things and mostly in between things and we're all informed by our environments" and I'm presuming that last bit, especially, is the key: That most likely, a lot of them are more a product of an environment that catered to the traits that they held (Being male, white), even if it's more by the sheer numbers alone and not the systems present that disincentivise someone not in those categories to participate in the activity.

This makes me think of Karl Popper’s Paradox, which is that when intolerance is tolerated, the intolerance thus allowed free reign will ultimately result in no tolerance.
