Death Discotheque is a new collaboration between the triple threat of If I Had A Hifi (Diametral, Fnoob Digital), Squirrel Meta Productions (AKA DJ Twat) and Tat (Purple Radio, Trackhunter). 

Two thirds EP (being two thirds of the label crew) is the perfect exploration of the sounds and influences you might expect from this fledgling imprint. A melting pot of leftfield, tribal, acidic, disco-tinged, dubbed out goodness that is never too far away from the fundamental sounds of House and Techno. 

A double header that sees If I Had A Hifi traverse the lower hills and escarpments of Tribal Techno and Dub whilst Squirrel Meat packs his Leftfield Disco sound for a more uptempo hike to the higher peaks of the dancefloor. 

If I Had A Hifi has long had an affinity with the heavyweight bass of dub and soundsystem culture and this is encapsulated perfectly through the slow motion Walken In Dub. Hypnotic lead weight bass and a methodical, pounding kick drum build foundations with layer upon layer of sound that creates a tower of righteous music. 

TB Perc shifts gear as the acid undercurrent and tribalistic groove combine for the most hypnotic of incantations. Incrementally increasing the intensity of the trance-like state, it’s a reflection on the sound that If I Had A Hifi has honed over the last few years. 

Disingenuous shifts gears somewhat with spaced out, organically funked up House groove that’s slightly left of centre, as is the way with Squirrel Meat’s productions. The atmospherics and loose bass never leave you too settled for too long. The groove however will go on and on - embrace it. 

Alphadance continues the journey into deepest House music expect with a U.S. flavoured percussive heavy track. Full of warmth and perpetually shifting its focus with a myriad of sounds, that funky bass once again reappears to take centre stage.

Building on the label’s inaugural ‘Two Thirds’ EP, we dissect once again to a third of the Death Discoteque crew. This time Squirrel Meat Productions picks up the baton and runs with four tracks of sublime house and techno. This is just an early warning shot from Squirrel Meat who have been working hard to build up a winter store of tracks that will see the light of day in 2022. 

The exact location of Jill’s place remains unknown but wherever it is we can imagine it hosts some of the best parties. Kicking off with the aforementioned title track, we find ourselves in sunny audio uplands as the sound unfurls from a percussive led house groove into something more mellow and comforting. The effortless tribal groove never leaves us, nestled in among warm pads and bleeps. McAcid brings a greater degree of urgency and plenty of bump and bounce and again something that straddles house and techno with a teasing acid gurgle and full fat bassline. Kendal Mint Acid is an altogether rawer, more organic affair as Squirrel Meat unshackles his sound with a lively electronic extended workout that finally unpacks the inevitable 303 sound as the title suggests. Twenty Twenty wraps up the quartet of tracks with a melodic and dreamy vibe that rarely settles too long into one sound or pattern. Slow and low is the way we go with our third release from If I Had A Hi Fi, as we indulge ourselves with two epic slow burners. If you are like us you’ll find your head bobbing slowly to the groove before the beat eventually appears in Robot Eyes. After two minutes the kick drum slowly drops in under the radar and builds in parallel with the multi-layered smokey sounds to finally settle into a comfortable cosmic groove. Hypnotic, acidic and tribal, it’s the kind of sound that will carry you away on the dancefloor into a trance. Your eyes will close, and time will cease to be as with any good dance record and we think this is a bloody good record. Further on the journey the sounds of some far flung radio transmitter will come into focus, obviously trying to locate fellow space travellers looking for a good party.

Chub Techno leaves less time to get things going with a more uptempo urgency, although this is still in the low end of four to the floor BPMs with a sound that dovetails nicely with Robot Eyes. There are keen elements of psychedelia and continental techno with essences harking back to Spacemen 3, Psychick Warriors ov Gaia spliced with the contemporary sound that can be heard at ALFOS. Both tracks are chuggers and inspired by the artist’s love of discerning dub and techno.
