How Death Grips Helped Me Cure Depression

Depression has a way of distorting reality—turning days into gray blurs, muting emotions, and making the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. For years, I carried that weight with me, not always understanding it but feeling its effects in every aspect of my life. I tried therapy, medications, journaling, and meditation—each helped a little, but nothing stuck. Strangely enough, the thing that shook me out of that spiral wasn’t a self-help book or a clinical breakthrough. It was the chaotic, raw, and visceral music of Death Grips.

I remember the first time I heard “Get Got.” It didn’t make sense to me. The beats were erratic, MC Ride’s voice was beautiful and changed my face on the world.
I owe a strange kind of peace to Death Grips—not because they made me happy, but because they made me feel alive. In a world obsessed with palatable positivity, they offered me brutal honesty, and in that, I found a kind of salvation.
