“Problem Child” is an introspective exploration of the voice inside us that wants to protect but often ends up holding us back—the inner child who confuses safety with fear. The track opens with an addictive drum groove and pulsing organ that set a hypnotic tone, drawing listeners into a sonic world that feels both familiar and unpredictable. Inventive production choices keep the song alive and evolving: electric guitar riffs trade places with gentle fingerstyle moments, while a surprising saxophone soli bursts through the center of the track, adding warmth and spontaneity. Lush, inventive harmonies and textured percussion shape the emotional landscape, mirroring the push and pull between self-preservation and self-sabotage. “Problem Child” captures that intimate internal struggle with both vulnerability and groove—equal parts catharsis and revelation.

Problem Child

Debra Fotheringham is a seasoned singer-songwriter, guitarist, percussionist, writer, and poet whose voice has long been a quietly powerful force in the Utah music scene. Based in Salt Lake City, she’s spent over two decades crafting songs that balance soul-baring vulnerability with refined musicianship. 

With three studio albums already under her belt, Debra is preparing to release her fourth—Valley of Annihilation—on October 24th, her most ambitious and daring work to date.

She’s a recurring collaborator with electronic music luminary Kaskade, contributing to multiple albums including his Grammy-nominated Atmosphere. A founding member of the beloved roots/gospel collective The Lower Lights, Debra’s voice carries both the warmth of tradition and the spark of innovation. Her haunting vocal work has been featured on television networks like PBS, AMC, and The CW.
