Debs McCoy - 'Therapy Sessions 1'

'As these nights draw in, Debs McCoy’s soundscape ‘Therapy Sessions 1’ offers something tender to the severity of the season. It is a gentle creature, revealing itself in cello lines and pensive piano assertions. Low bowed drones underly each thought; sometimes as a comforting blanket, at other times as a deep depression. As the piece develops from its initial timid, and more abstract, motifs a spritelier pattern emerges in the piano part. As this life reveals itself, the weight of the strings subsides. Though much of the tonality of the individual parts are rooted to a major centre, they are cleverly arranged into a collage which uses various juxtapositions to disorientate the natural positivity of major intervals into something more ambiguous and strange. The reverb is applied with temperance aiding the natural sustain of the instruments. When the last chord fades, you realise how this music has elevated your sympathy, for in the silence that follows, you feel that the sound is still there, like a phantom limb.'

This is the first of a series of 20 pieces of music that I've written as part of a collection for a therapist I'm seeing. I can't afford to pay him and he suggested I pay him with a piece of art or music. I've written a piece of music after every session with him since the end of January and a few pieces after dreams I've had. They all begin with improvised piano pieces. Some have been left as that, others have been worked on with other instruments and sounds added.

DEBS MCCOY - The Therapy Sessions No.1

Saffron, the daughter of my very good friends Sarah and Andrew devastatingly killed herself 2 years ago. Andrew ran the Great North Run the other weekend in her memory and to raise awareness and funds for mental health issues.

I wrote this piece of music having been sat outside late one night with hundreds of stars directly above my house. I thought of Saffron while struggling with some of my own difficulties.
Sarah had tried to phone me earlier that evening while out on a walk to get me to look at the sky..but she had no phone reception. She said the sky was beautiful and looked like under a mushroom. She wanted me to see it.  

I wrote this for Sarah and Andrew after he'd completed the Great North Run in memory of Saffron.

Debs is a Northumberland artist and maker of music. She trained at The Kent Institute of Art & Design and Goldsmith's, University of London.

Debs is a multi-instrumentalist. She writes what could be described as acoustic indie-folk. She also writes cinematic soundscapes.
Debs has played live in session for the BBC. She’s received multiple plays on BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio Newcastle, Amazing Radio, Newcastle Roots Music Radio, Debt Records, Radio KC, Squarepip Radio, WRIR Radio USA, OGR Radio USA, Columbia University Radio USA, Storyteller Music Australia in the past 18 months.

Debs will be collaborating on two different projects in 2014 with British jazz pianist Matthew Bourne www.matthewbourne.com and New York based cellist Leah Coloff www.leahcoloff.com
