So, I finally made a skipjacking program.  In NodeJS of all things:

I essentially tried to make a Skipmunks song.  I don't think it turned out abysmal, but who knows.

I probably should've pitched it down just a smidge; I think that's what Stallio -- who does Skipmunks -- does.

Huzzah, I spent five days with a 103/105-degree COVID fever making what is essentially a Skipmunks mix of a Ken Ashcorp song.

As far as I know, it's impossible to make a skipping pattern for a song like this with BPM detection, so I did mine by hand, and I think it went pretty well.  Honestly, I think I prefer doing it by hand; I avoid any jank from computer detection, and I can selectively skip sections intentionally and artistically.

If I get inspired, I might take this into FLStudio and make it into a proper echobeat song by adding some bass, but whatevs, I like it how it is for now.

I switched the main WAV of the main track of the project to the bass WAV in order to get a cut that's just the skipjacked lowend.  Forgot to change the alt source for skipping rules with 4x speed factor, and got this.

So basically, I spent an hour or two converting this track to see if I could make fake skipmunks
I opened the project for Hanging by a Thread, and changed the source WAV *from* Fireflies but pitch-lowered by four semitones *to* an unedited WAV file of Fireflies.
Then I just hit ctrl-a to select *all* skipping rules, and changed every rule from whatever it was to a rule with subsamples F and G (both taking up half the interval), a speed factor of 4x, and a playback pattern of "FGgGgGgG" (lowercase letters denote a subsample being played in reverse). This is meant to emulate the one skipping pattern used in all Skipmunks tracks. But, it's slightly off; skipmunks' skipping patters come from abusing Ableton's pitch change function when set to 23 semitones (which means the speed factor is actually 3.776x, but I think 4x is close enough).
Since each rule has a speed factor of four, the entire track is raised by two octaves (24 semitones) as the skipping rules are applied.

After skipjacking it, I dragged that file into a different DAW (Audacity) and lowered its pitch by 13 semitones, leaving the final track 11 semitones higher than the original.
Finally, I did a low pass to cut around the 15khz range. Because, surprisingly, raising a song's pitch has a the opportunity to create some uncomfortably-high tones.

The largest discrepancy is, of course, the actual placement/alignment of the skipping patterns. Stallio uses beat/event detection and tend to be more coarse, (fine enough to catch all the elements), while intervals I make tend to be a lot finer (as in shorter)

*edit:  yeah turns out Skipmunks has a bit finer of intervals on average?  At least usually.  So yeah, I don't know what's up
