CupoCupo is a duo of musicians hailing from Bergamo, Italy presenting their second work after the debut ‘Hypermetabolism’ EP out earlier this year on the US label TAR. Coming with an album cover by the Italian visual artist eurasiandesert and an official two-sided A5 300 gr. cardboard artwork print, the 4-tracker 'Armor' EP is a coherent, eventful episode of knife-edge post-club hybridization, a treasury of outstanding sound design skills, vicious bass handling, and rhythmical obsessivity.

The centerpiece of their work is extensive vocal manipulation, employing voice chops with the role of primary composition tools within the multi-faceted pieces rich in heavy kick drums, snappy percussions, and gurgling vibrations. Drawing influence from contemporary electronic genres as well as free-form experimental music, the EP is closed by a trancey, grandiose rework of the opening track Yerro curated by the influential artist Galen Tipton (@galentipton) and a somber, pitch-black remix by Italian-based composer and producer SHE/MACHINE (@shevsmachine)

With ‘Armor’, CupoCupo hand out explosions of shattered sounds cramming themselves in turbulent flows of energy, where self-perception is challenged, strength is tested, and certainties are dismantled. Sealed lips utter red-hot rants oscillating from burning outbursts of chaos to sudden clarity. Tragic voices sing penetrating ballads for wandering bodies, waiting for their destiny to manifest and vehemently start opposing it. Light comes with darkness, and anything can be worth struggling for. CupoCupo’s outings are nothing but heartfelt testimony that brighter times are yet to come. Or not.

Astraltopia is the third and final compilation in the Topia series, as well as the terminal release in the Astral Plane Recordings catalog. Made up of contributions from longtime APR artists and friends, Astraltopia traverses outgrowths of past label releases, novel sonic formulations and the infra-zones between and underneath extant club sounds. 'Vibrio', the debut release from Sydney producer SCAM (@scamscamscam), offers four love songs written for bacteria and molecules. Examining geosmin, luciferase, slime mold, mushrooms, THC, morphine and other companions, the EP zooms in on human encounters with our microscopic kin on Earth to explore the emotional terrain of inter-species and inter-chemical intimacies.
Sonically, 'Vibrio' injects OTT emotionality and TMI sentimentality into robust and playful rhythms. On EP opener 'Host' a floaty late-noughties R’n’B lead winds around a TED Talk snippet declaring our collective status as microbial hosts. 'Crumb', made with producer and vocalist @Seayams, contrasts the symbiotic beauty of bioluminescence with the biopolitical strategies of anti-injection blue light. Another Seayams collaboration - 'Tetra Crush' - narrativises the search for water and longing for rain so fundamental to our species as assisted by our long-term crush, geosmin (the bacteria that contributes to petrichor: the smell of rain). 'QQ' closes with bouncy drums over looping samples from Coil’s '5-Methoxy-N, N-Dimethyl- (5-MeO- DMT)' and 'Physarum Sonification', a recording of the bio-electrical activity of slime molds by Interspecifics — essentially an invitation for slime molds to come out on Friday.
A rose-tinted trip through oft-overlooked intimacies between us and our non-human collaborators in Life, 'Vibrio' suggests that these entanglements are every bit as flirtatious, devotional and co-dependent as our human relationships.

The EP was written and recorded on Darug and Gadigal land where sovereignty was never ceded. 'Vibrio' drops on Friday 12 October 2018

A follow up to let all your biometric phlegm out (2018), the tracks on gucheee boots are a collection of recent dance floor explorations by the Lagos-born, Philadelphia-based DJ that swings through everything from ambient to lento violento and go-go. The opening track sets a Nigerian Youtuber’s video on spiritual counsel in politically corrupt times atop a recent track from Kelman Duran to menacing and critical effect. In the video, the YouTuber warns against blaming the spirit world for people’s problems or trusting spiritual advisors to solve them. Instead, he points at the oppressive systems of the world around us.
