The second of Alma Negra’s 12 Rhythms Series is dedicated to the Maloya sound from La Réunion, a tiny island where a melting pot of cultures is reflected strongly in its music. Maloya’s roots go back to the time of slavery, its quick tempo and raw energy making it not only a popular dance music but also a powerful protest through movement.
On their Maloya EP, the Basel collective pay tribute to the hypnotic rhythms that were feared both by the Catholic Church and the French government for the musical form’s subversive part in the rebellion against colonialism.
The release revolves around two contrasting Alma Negra re-workings of Lindigo’s Tany Be. The first takes a classic call & response structure in 12/8 and 6/8 rhythms, adding a driving bass line and guitar licks. A solid 909-kick locks things in step, along with a sax flourish and FM synths. Their re-imagining of African and Tamil influences for modern dancers is a triumphant manifestation of the music’s origins.
With the main reworking focusing on a rolling dance floor groove, the Dub Mix concentrates on trance-inducing aspect of Maloya. Using a modular set up to pick apart layers of percussion, it is a dense and heady trip into the spirit world.
The B side focuses on Christine Salem, one of today's stars of the Maloya scene. Without wanting to squeeze the soul from her deep tones, Kabaré is slowed down a notch, with drums added sparingly. This sensitive treatment gives the track just enough weight and tension to punch in on todays dance floors without losing the intent of the original.
The source material for this EP has been road tested from the very beginning of Alma Negra’s journey. The collective have gone to great lengths to ensure the original creators are on board with their treatment of their music and are honoured to be given the chance to distil their own ethos into a record that is bubbling with today’s dance floor drive. Their reverent treatment aims to preserve the power and beauty of the source material, to bring uncovered gems to a new audience.

Hard-hitting afro-dancehall from Accra to Haarlem via London.

A unique collaboration between Ghanaian MC+ singer K.O.G (Kweku of Ghana) and Dutch producers Umoja.

￼Born in Accra (Ghana) but currently resident in the Northern British ex-industrial city of Sheffield, K.O.G has exploded onto the European scene, slaying shows across Europe with afro-futurist outfit Onipa, afro-funk monster group K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade and as a guest with The Busy Twist, Afriquoi, Nubiyan Twist and Congo Natty.

This is the second in the series of one off collaborations with producers from around the world, following up on ‘Change’ with iZem (Lisbon) on Guts’ Pura Vida label, with forthcoming collaborations with The Busy Twist, Jus Now and more in the pipeline. With great responses to the latest Onipa EP on Wormfood/Mawimbi (September 2018), and many released in the pipeline for 2019 the K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade (Heavenly Sweetness) and guest features on Nubiyan Twist’s album (Strut), 2019 is definitely going to be his year.

Originating from Haarlem in the Netherlands, Dutch duo Umoja have over a decade of experience dishing out warm dusty grooves, unified by an intrinsic appreciation and understanding of world rhythm, the mechanisms of groove and contemporary electronic beats. Any attempt to pin down their sound is only a pipe dream: In the spirit of ‘Umoja’ a Swahili word meaning ‘Unity’, their approach to music is to unify grooves across the seven oceans, one record at a time.

“Kponyole” is a dark, brooding, digi-dancehall banger, with deep subs, hypnotic, rolling bass and sharp percussive undertones. Meaning ‘Be Careful’ in the Ewe language of the Volta region of Eastern Ghana, it warns of the dangers everyone must be careful of, from betrayal by close ones to spiritual pollution. Watch your back. Watch your brother. Watch out for bad spirits. Watch wear you tread. Watch your speakers too, that low end will do them some damage if you are not careful!

“Ayena” is much lighter, a traditional, hi-life style homage to the beauty of the female sex: shake for me, dance for me – with warm, bouncy, almost cartoon-like beats that will make any dancefloor bubble.

The Full EP comes with bonus instrumentals and a special Umoja VIP.

Umoja ft K.O.G - AYENA

Deux ans après leur rencontre, Mawimbi révèle enfin sa collaboration avec Ghetto Kumbé (ZZK Records), trio mêlant les rythmes afro-colombiens à l’électronique ! « El Caribe » est la seconde composition originale signée des mains du collectif Mawimbi, ainsi que le premier extrait issu de leur premier album, dont la sortie est prévue pour le début de l’année 2021.

Irradiant les scènes européennes de leur énergie irrésistible au cours d’une tournée durant l’été 2018, le trio colombien Ghetto Kumbé établit alors son camp de base à Paris. A l’initiative de leur manager Olivier Maligorne, une rencontre est organisée avec le collectif Mawimbi. Une session studio s’en suit aux côtés de Clément Vincent (Pouvoir Magique), avec l’objectif de
laisser libre cours à leur passion commune pour la fusion afro-électronique. Mawimbi et Ghetto Kumbé se croisent à nouveau à l’occasion de plusieurs concerts et festivals, avant de retourner en studio un an plus tard, afin d’enregistrer de nouvelles idées et de donner au morceau sa forme finale.
Le résultat de ces sessions en studio est un vrai hit « crossover », qui pourrait bien ravir le cœur des amateurs de disques tropicaux, autant que celui du grand public. Puisant dans le dancehall et la cumbia, « El Caribe » est un hommage brûlant aux rythmes afros de la côte caribéenne colombienne. De mélodies vocales entêtantes en mariages de percussions
épicées, « El Caribe » alterne entre douce nostalgie et allégresse pure, évoquant une enfance passée aux bords des caraïbes qui ne les quittera jamais.
