we open on the tips of an evergreen in the pacific north west. a vast forest covered in fog and the beginnings of night as the sun sets. a lone road divides these woodlands, and on that road is a single car. it’s vibrant tail lights cut through the fog like a hot blade. the vehicle continues to travel the long lonesome road as we look to the sky and see the title:

The Ranger.

getting closer to the car,  a prestigious black brz that is clearly maintained and cared for. we begin to an hear upbeat tune emit from the vehicle as we move closer. suddenly we’re inside the car and see our protagonist. a decent looking man, made from american  stock, built on a muscular frame. he wears a tight fitting dress shirt paired with a crimson tie and black pants. he looks tired, as any day spent in a cubicle, making meaningless phone calls would do to a man. despite his fatigue, he bobs his head to the music. romanticizing a previous life where his real talents of being a private investigator and gun for hire were put to use. those days are over now. 
he arrives at home in the black of night. a restful piece of land with a house and stable. as he reaches for the door his stomach groans. in a series of stitched together actions we see our protagonist prepare a bowl of ramen along with a kettle of jasmine to the rhythm of a heavy bell. suddenly a dark blare invades his mine, an ominous light leaps to every corner of his sight. he looks around frantically, unsure of what he saw, he searches through his home. we see newspapers lining the walls, photos of intimidating strangers and accolades for military service. he continues to scour opening drawers and cupboards to the tune of a whistling kettle. he suddenly sees it, a light or pure white hovering over a door. as he approaches the light glides to the door he entered from. he walks outside to the edge of his homes light and stares. the light is there, in the distance, surrounded by dark. it calls to him, beckons him to follow. he continues to stare, then without any thought. 

he begins to run.

he chases after the light, sprinting towards the call. it leads him deep into the tall trees far away from home. shrouded in the dark with only the light ahead of him to guide. our protagonist trips over rocks and roots. scratches and tears his face and clothes. the light seems so far away, but the dark forest round him begins to change. a static film begins to invade his vision.  covering all but the path that leads to the light. as he runs further and further the static grows stronger and stronger. a force begins to weigh on our protagonist, slowing his step and squeezing his lungs. the light is still so far away, barely larger than the twinkle of the stars in the sky. but he has come so far, he cannot turn back, and has he trudges forward battered and bruised. the weight becomes unbearable as the static noise becomes deafening. he reaches a clearing and collapses. the static consumes him, illusions of shadowy hands begins to cover him, the light is still far but begins to grow bigger, and brighter. It grows and grows illuminating the field until the white light is all our protagonist can see before he falls into a deep sleep….

and begins to dream.
