#6 "Chime Asonye presents #Songs4Change" in Nigeria, Africa, & the World! 

By now you may have heard of the death and destruction that has recently greeted Nigeria. If not, the tale is sobering: hundreds if not thousands were massacred in Nigeria’s northeastern town of Baga in early January. According to Amnesty International, 2,000 people lost their lives as Boko Haram, a domestic terrorist group responsible for kidnapping over 200 girls in Chibok last April, attacked the community. Amnesty International described this attack as the “deadliest ever” in Boko Haram’s six-year history; a description that the Nigerian Defense Force confirmed in a statement.
 
While the exact number of deaths are hard to ascertain, the toll of destruction remains clear. Using satellite imagery of Baga and neighboring settlements, Human Rights Watch’s Nigeria researcher Mausi Segun said the pictures “clearly show the large-scale destruction of civilian properties in the area.” These images are direct evidence of what Segun calls a “systematic campaign of arson directed against the civilian population.” 16 towns were destroyed, homes burned down, and many Nigerians continue to be internally displaced and fleeing to other countries due to the insecurity. This escalation in violence is also exacerbated by the recent use of girls, possibly one as young as 10, to carry out suicide attacks in marketplaces in Maiduguri and Potiskum.
 
Boko Haram’s intensification cannot go unnoticed. Orisefemi's song "Religious War" speaks to this, calling on Nigeria to rise up and demanding for government accountability and leadership. Let us pray for Nigeria, as we honor the memory of the victims of Baga and other Boko Haram attacks.
