Shipwreck

Today, it is Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere, and for the next six months, the days are going to gradually get longer!  It’s crazy to think that this cycle has probably happened for the last 4.3 billion years!  Sometimes, we can get so distracted by short term circumstances that we neglect to notice just how amazing reality can be.  Imagination allows thoughts like this to materialise.  What do you think?

Miditrip proudly presents ‘The Substance’ EP courtesy of Günce Aci, showcasing the Istanbul based producer and DJ’s more raw, rave and hard house leaning style across three original cuts.
In recent years Günce Acı has become a figurehead in the Istanbul scene and beyond, racking up releases on esteemed imprints such as the Curses helmed Ombra INTL, Jennifer Cardini launches and Noura Labbani’s Dischi Autunno, Eskimo Recordings and Silicone Soul’s legendary Darkroom Dubs, a striking sign of Aci’s ability to craft powerful compositions primed for underground dance floors across the globe.
Title-track ‘The Substance’ leads the way and sees Günce laying down twitchy acid-tinged bass stabs, gritty rave stabs, and tension building synth work alongside hypnotic, bubbling atmospherics tones and an amalgamation of intertwined spoken word vocal lines.
‘Too Loug To Think’ follows next and steers the EP into a full 90’s rave-tinged direction courtesy of choppy bass stabs, trancey staccato synth lines and bubbling arpeggios alongside a raw, crunchy rhythm section. The aptly titled ‘Last Dance’ then concludes the EP, an anthemic end of night jam employing emotive stab sequences, oscillating resonant synth flutters, crisp drums and an ever evolving dynamism throughout.

PREMIERE : Günce Aci - Too Loud To Think (Miditrip Records)

The main theme in today’s #MusicalMinute came to me as I was constructing the chord for the drone (PCS 7-31).  Regular listeners will know that this is meant to represent circumstances.  However, over time I realised that I had used a similar melody in the past.  Indeed, further investigation led me to August 2013!  A lot has happened in the interim, not least in the way these tracks reflect what is going on.  What do you think?

22 Dec 25 Evolving Ideas

I have always found it amazing how organists can play with both hands and feet at the same time.  To me, it is very similar to flying a helicopter!  Today’s #MusicalMinute contains a melody that is played using the pedal board.  It is a simple melody, but it’s presence is felt more than heard — even I could play it.  With just over a week left of 2025 I should be finalising my plans for an ambient minimalistic 2026.  What do you think?

23 Dec 25 Sub Plot

If you listen carefully you might hear some wrong notes!  The funny thing is, they don’t exist.  For me, they only became apparent after I’d made the recording and finished the mastering.  Perhaps they are sympathetic harmonies created during the finishing process.  Interestingly, the more I listen to this track, the more clearly I hear them — something to do with the Oud?  The mind can play funny tricks when you’re waiting.  What do you think?

24 Dec 25 Waiting Game

Today’s #MusicalMinute is a strange one — but then, the hand I’m dealt sometimes takes me in a direction different from the one I might have preferred. Today’s pitch-class set, 6-20, is a little discordant for Christmas Day. Yet within that wall of sound hides a story, and perhaps today’s track betrays the fact that my wife and I have been playing catch-up and watching Stranger Things. Life can be a surprising adventure. What do you think?

PREMIERE : Nightdrive - Serpa (Bøne.FM)

Regular listeners will know that I have been experimenting with soundscapes based on pitch-class sets containing between 3 and 8 notes.  This is in preparation for an ambitious challenge in 2026 to create an extended pieces where each month culminates in track which conveys the character of the times in which they were composed.  All this, within the context of ambient minimalism.  What do you think?

26 Dec 25 Cherished Time

Today’s #MusicalMinute is based on a pitch-class set of 7-31 which, for me, gives it the feel of a diminished chord with glimpses of major and minor.  The melody is right at the bottom of the track, again more felt that heard.  Regular listeners will have gathered that the organ is going to feature in many of my tracks from now on.  I just love the depth that it provides to the full orchestra.  What do you think?
